Kembrel’s latest venture was opening a Men’s Shop in the midtown village. With such a small space and an unconventional retail/showroom space. I knew something that needed to be done. So, I suggest to the CEO, Head of Store Operations…

Vivian Maier https://templeadlib.com/vivian-maier/ https://templeadlib.com/vivian-maier/#respond Mon, 02 Apr 2012 19:21:57 +0000 https://www.templeadlib.com/?p=11409 As you may have read in my last post, I had the opportunity to view original Vivian Maier Photos at the AIPAD photography show. I learned about Vivan last year, and her story is one of a kind. Of course, she wasn’t famous when she was alive. Maier died in 2009, just before her thousands upon thousands of negatives were discovered. In fact, she never even saw many of her own photographs.

5 Campaigns that Paved the Way https://templeadlib.com/5-campaigns-that-paved-the-way/ https://templeadlib.com/5-campaigns-that-paved-the-way/#respond Mon, 09 May 2011 14:42:39 +0000 https://www.templeadlib.com/?p=5986 5 Campaigns that Paved the Way We can all think of the most creative ads we’ve ever seen, the most successful, or even the funniest ones, but after reading James Twitchell’s, 20 Ads that Shook the World, I now know the most impactful ads ever created. These campaigns paved the way for current art, copy, and research directors. They paved the way, in a sense that their contribution to the ad…

Chivas Regal speaks for itself… https://templeadlib.com/chivas-regal-speaks-for-itself/ https://templeadlib.com/chivas-regal-speaks-for-itself/#respond Sat, 26 Mar 2011 17:32:51 +0000 https://www.templeadlib.com/?p=5021 A couple of days ago we had a discussion about genericide in Morality and Law (ad course). While I like this ad especially given how old it is, this wouldn’t fly today. I don’t really think genericide is a problem unless I dislike the dominant brand. So what is genericide? It’s when a brand’s recognition overtakes an entire category. I resent that people call mp3 players, iPods. I had a first…

Disastro Ecologico https://templeadlib.com/disastro-ecologico/ https://templeadlib.com/disastro-ecologico/#comments Fri, 11 Feb 2011 01:46:47 +0000 https://www.templeadlib.com/?p=3919 Here’s a throwback design related post. It’s modern with old techniques. It’s been done but it’s fresh. Alberto Seveso is his name, and guess what? He is Italian if you haven’t gotten that from his name or the title already. He’s created ultra-realistic flowing smoke scenes out of ink and water. INK AND WATER! There’s so much motion here that it kind of depresses you the more you look at it.

Listerine: For more than your mouth? https://templeadlib.com/listerine-for-more-than-your-mouth/ https://templeadlib.com/listerine-for-more-than-your-mouth/#respond Sun, 03 Oct 2010 22:43:22 +0000 https://smc.temple.edu/ad-lib/?p=1803 I still have a number of vintage ads that I’ll be posting from time to time. Next up is Listerine. It was placed twice in the November 1970 issue of Ebony magazine. I wasn’t around in the 70’s but I remember the motif of the statuesque bottle on the black background. Something I never really noticed until finding these ads was Listerine’s claims to fight colds, sore throats, minor cuts, scratches…

Big Mac: Dynomite! https://templeadlib.com/big-mac-dynomite/ https://templeadlib.com/big-mac-dynomite/#comments Thu, 24 Jun 2010 12:40:14 +0000 https://smc.temple.edu/ad-lib/?p=1375 I don’t think it’s any coincidence that this guy looks like J.J. from Good Times. This ad was placed in the very same month that Good Times went off the air (August 1979). Back then ads probably had a longer lead time than they do now. Regardless, I don’t feel one way or another about McDonald’s “ethnic marketing.” Even today it ranges from “what were they thinking?” to others that are more…

Brawny: A look at brand personality https://templeadlib.com/brawny-a-look-at-brand-personality/ https://templeadlib.com/brawny-a-look-at-brand-personality/#comments Mon, 12 Apr 2010 16:16:13 +0000 https://smc.temple.edu/ad-lib/?p=942 The original Brawny Man was based on Paul Bunyan. I remember the older commercials where he was a larger than life character. He looked like a cross between Chuck Norris and Tom Selleck (stars of the 80’s). The third “Brawny” from the 90’s (not pictured) had a longer haircut. The only similarity between the new one and the old ones is the shirt. Perhaps an upgrade was due, but Paul Bunyan has been…

Price about. At Macy’s. Guaranteed for one full year’s wear. Prices slightly higher in west.”…
