Old City Has Never Felt Younger

My name is Jaclyn Kessel and I am currently a Junior Advertising Art Direction Major. This semester, I started my first real internship at Maiden Media Group, located in the heart of Old City, Philadelphia. Maiden Media Group is a small agency, run by young digital natives who focus on social media marketing. Everyone who works at Maiden is unbelievably kind and intelligent. Prior to this opportunity, I’ve never had the chance to surround myself with such young, motivated, and bright people. Just over the course of the last three weeks, I’ve learned more than I could ever imagine…

The Neiman Adventures: Preparing for My Journey

Hello, my name is Xand Griffin. Currently I’m an art direction intern at Neiman. I’m writing this post because my team just won a major account. Not only is it the first project I worked on, it’s a very exciting one for the agency as a whole. We were in the running for a long time, and presentation after presentation we were in the last two. Now we are the agency that company chose to work with. It’s a good feeling to win. I had to beat someone to get into my current position. It’s not pretty, it’s not nice,…

NY Fashion Week is Just an App Away

There’s an iPhone app for nearly everything – literally, nearly everything – and with good reason. Apps are without a doubt a smart way to gain interaction with a brand or event’s target audience. Therefore its no surprise that New York Fashion Week has developed a series of apps of their own to help attendees better navigate their way around the event, AND to involve NYFW fans who can’t be at the show, but still want to be part of the buzz. The first iPhone app for NYFW was developed in 2008 that allowed users to browse look-by-look slide shows, trends…

Bears Eat Berries Press

Bears Eat Berries is a small letterpress/design studio based in Washington D.C. Ran by a girl named Laura, the studio still uses a vintage press and hand mixed inks. Inspired by clean typography, texture, and folky/modern motifs, there is no doubt you will find the perfect card or design for whatever you are looking for! “I operate (and get my exercise from!) a 1911 Chandler & Price floor printing press in its original form with a cast-iron foot treadle that powers the press. Products from Bears Eat Berries Press are unique and handcrafted, using the traditional form of printmaking with…

Dusty Signs

video by Hunter Johnson If you’re following my posts, you probably have noticed that I have a thing for the hand-made craft. I love the tradition of actually making something with your hands that cannot be duplicated exactly how you see it. This is exactly why I love the hand painted signs of  Dan Madsen. He is holding true to the tradition of the hand painted signs and lettering, and following in his grandfathers footsteps. Next time your driving/walking/biking around, take notice to the authentic painted signs on brick buildings. In my eyes, they really stand out next to the…

Sarah Bernhard, Photographer/ Account Planner

I first found Sarah Bernhard on flickr, where I just admired her photographs. I did a little research and found a bunch of information about her that really inspired me. She is an account planner at an advertising agency full time in Hamburg, Germany. However her passion is photography. Honestly, she reminds me a lot of myself! Her work has a documentary but personal feel to them. She has a way of making you feel as if you are right there with her, experiencing what she is experiencing. She shoots with film, which is one more thing that inspires me,…

McDonalds Walks the Catwalk @ NYFW

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City is one of the biggest events of the year on America’s fashion agenda. The biggest, best, and most luxurious brands will be strutting their styles down the runway starting February 13th, and all eyes will be on the newest trends, even if most of us can only dream of affording them. One brand that IS, however, attainable for the common wallet and can be seen all week long in the hands of NYFW models, assistants, designers and publicists is McDonalds coffee. McDonald’s will be launching a more complete McCafe campaign starting in May,…

All Covers Are Not Created Equal.

I came across the Glamour magazine and saw that Rachel McAdams was on the cover. But besides that, I realized there was so much copy on the cover I can barely decide what to read first. So I decided to investigate magazine covers. I looked through series of magazine covers for 2012 and I have found 4 that caught my attention. The first one being Glamour magazine, the February issue, I realized that personally, there was too much copy on the cover. Usually covers are supposed to be the most appealing, where the image and type works together to persuade…

Can you Photoshop?

As students in the creative industry, we are always challenged with our Photoshop skills by making things look just right. We learn that we need to make sure when we use the Creative Suite programs, we need to try our best. In this example, we can see that it was done very poorly. This week, I looked at the Us Weekly Magazine. It’s the January 23rd issue with the cover of Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake. I was going through this magazine earlier this week and I came across an advertisement for a USA Network program Royal Pains. I don’t…

H&M Uses Digitally Built Bodies On Website

Three things are certain in this world: death, taxes, and the photoshopping of print ads. Guidelines on just how far companies are allowed to go with their airbrushing are slowly setting in, but what can be said for publishing images with ACTUAL fake bodies in combination with real human heads? Discount fashion retailers H&M are taking some heat for using “virtual mannequin” bodies which match the skin tone of whatever model’s heads they stick on top. AdWeek‘s article criticizes this practice, stating that it sends a message that everyone’s bodies should be the same “unrealistic” proportions. So, is this REALLY…

DVF’s Faceless Ads

The main objective of fashion ads, despite their general lack of a campaign-able storyline and body copy, is to make the consumer want to be that woman or man in the ad; covet what they have and become who they are. High-end designer Diane Von Furstenberg’s Spring 2012 ads take that concept to another level. As an “ode to surrealist paintings”, each ad features faceless models, with the thought in mind that the consumer will better be able to visualize themselves in whatever garments and accessories are shown in the print ad. In the bottom left corner reads, “Be the woman…

I’ll Take the Small Agency Roll Please

This past week I completed my first week of my second internship at Maiden Media. Three words: I Love It! It’s a small shop tucked away in the chic-ness of Olde City but once you step inside you quickly realize there is nothing small about Maiden Media. A creative agency that focuses on digital media (websites, social media, and creative) Maiden Media is for those who thrive on hash tags, gifs, apps, trending topics and javascript. Initially, I was worried about how I would fit, but that quickly faded after the first few days. I stated earlier that this is my second…

Who loves ya?

I started my first day at LevLane, an advertising and PR agency by City Hall, about 3 weeks ago. After my first day, I told everyone how much I loved it, that I couldn’t wait to go back. This love and excitement, I thought, would probably fade over time as the internship progressed. It didn’t. I’m still just as excited to go to LevLane every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I find myself staying late and having to rush to get to campus for meetings or class because I’m so reluctant to leave each day. LevLane is considered a large agency. They…

Ms. Brown is Coming!

So this Sunday is THE day when we get to see the Super Bowl XLVI. When the Super Bowl comes near we know the best advertisements of the year will be making it’s appearance. If you look at Adweek, you can see the previews for some of the commercials that will be appearing. (Let me just say, it’s very interesting and funny so go check it out!) Like I said in the previous post, I’m looking through People Magazine this week and another advertisement caught my attention. We all know and love M&M’s. They come in all shapes and sizes…
