Teenagers Don’t Care: Part I

At least that’s what I thought. I was one after all a short time ago. Being only 23, the days of my own apathy are not a forgotten ghost of a memory. I remember being apathetic and I remember being stupid and I remember something I almost forgot. I remember a troupe of students from some college or another coming into my high school and teaching Spanish. I don’t even remember much of college, much less high school. But this particular memory, of learning spanish with a college student, has stuck in my head. I may not remember which college…

I LOVE the High School Advertising Workshop

Teaching has never been an option for me. For starters, I have always been told that I am the worst teacher in the world. The simple task of teaching someone how to do something I do every day was always a challenging task for me. Also, I have never had any formal experience actually teaching people. Going into Palumbo Academy to teach students a topic that I myself was learning about was a huge deal. How was I ever going to pull this off? Yeah, I know I had the support of my classmates who may be better teachers than…

Update on the Art Direction Award Winners from last year’s TADA Awards….

Each year, the Advertising Department awards a Top Art Direction Award and an award for Excellence in Art Direction. The two students that were awarded these prestigious awards on behalf of the faculty at last spring’s TADA Awards (Temple Advertising Department Awards) were Evan Kirkley (Top) and Jeffrey Davis (Excellence). Evan Kirkley is interning at LevLane and Quaker City Mercantile and busy interviewing for jobs in both Philadelphia and NYC. I hope to hear any day now that Evan will be working full time for a very lucky advertising agency or design firm. You can check out Evan’s portfolio here: …

Sporting Event Posters

From an advertising standpoint, sports are always walking a fine line. They attract a large and diverse audience–one that may only have that sport in common, like with the Olympics. They are usually highly traditional, with a complex web of social cues to navigate; how does one begin to advertise for a polo game? Most of all I think that sports advertising has to be incredibly emotional. Because when you get right down to it, most sports are just about chasing stuff and watching other people chase stuff–keeping an idea that old fresh can be daunting. I’m not that into them;…

PHL 17 Home of… MY INTERNSHIP!

As I applied to PHL-17  for my internship I did not know what to expect. I had just taken the course Marketing Media Products  at Temple University and was just starting to understand the world of adverting sales. I was extremely nervous and had no idea if I was going to even like this side of advertising. Starting my internship, I thought that I would keep a positive attitude. I figured, if I absolutely hated the world of ad sales, at least this internship will have taught me that.   Thankfully, just the opposite of my fears came true. I…

My Semester as a Paperdoll

Hi everyone! This semester I have been working at Two Paperdolls which is a Letterpress Design House in Wayne. Two Paperdolls was started about ten years ago by my boss Vanessa Kreckel. Her dream was to continue designing while incorporating the clients’ unique characteristics into their own personal designed product. There are about fifteen employees here which makes it easy to get hands on experience in the different departments. I have been working the closest with the marketing and management departments, in which I often work with the company finances, manage our online sales through our website and Etsy site,…

Up next…web design

So the semester is almost over and so is my internship.  I definitely gained experience and learned about crucial aspects of the industry like deadlines and dealing with clients. I also got the chance to work with all types of media in print and web which was really exciting. It gave me an overview of where I want to focus my studies and career in the future. What I liked the most was web design. You can do so much with it and with technology changing everyday who knows what will come next. I must say coding and actually making…

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

“The most wonderful time of the year” is also a very stressful time of year for Two Paperdolls. Two Paperdolls specializes in letterpress printing of custom invitations, identity branding, mitzvah, and day of event extras. Normally, the majority of the clients that I have seen in Two Paperdolls are future brides deciding on invitations and more for their weddings. However, in the recent holiday bustle there have been so many holiday orders! People have been rushing in since September to have their holiday cards designed by Two Paperdolls. In the normal design stages in the studio, the client meets with…

A Slapshot at the Entertainment Industry

This past semester, I received a crash course in the sports and entertainment industry through my internship with Comcast-Spectacor at the Wells Fargo Center. I interned with the Group Sales/Event Services department where I had an array of tasks, from giving tours of the Wells Fargo Center, to executing direct mailers for upcoming events. Being in the sports and entertainment industry, I of course had the opportunity work these events, and experience them first hand. One of the most excited was the Flyers home opener. Prior to the Philadelphia Flyers home opener; there was a Flyers Happy Hour in…

Shalom! Interning at The Jewish History Museum

The National Museum of American Jewish History is located in Philadelphia’s Independent Hall (within Center City). The museum prides itself in celebrating American Jewish culture, providing resources for the American Jewish community and educating other members of the Philadelphia community about American Jewish history. My internship experience at the museum’s gift shop has been fabulous. The staff is very friendly and welcoming and it is refreshing to see how much the staff genuinely cares about the museum. I have witnessed how a business is run and I’ve learned how to manage a website from the back-end. Past advertising lessons have been…

Control room tour at NBC

Starting an internship at NBC was an exciting issue for me. As the supervisors introduced themselves to over 40 interns for the fall semester, everyone was excited to work in their separate department. I have interned for marketing positions and web designing positions so media related internship was quite new subject for me. Rather than learning more on the advertising aspects, I learned lot about the large organization system, and how it operates connected to the advertisement between TV shows. After I am finished with my daily tasks, which mostly deals with uploading TV sections, I can look around the…

Beauty Buzz

Hi my name is Travis Benner and I am currently a junior advertising major with a focus in copywriting and account management. I have been meaning to blog for a while, but haven’t had much time to sit down and write something. In the beginning of September I accepted a position as an intern at Philadelphia Magazine, one of the region’s most successful and long lasting magazines. I was presented with a few opportunities, but chose Phillymag because I wanted to become more involved with Philadelphia. Although I knew I wouldn’t gain the agency experience I was looking for, I…

Digital Is Where It’s At

My internship has opened my eyes to just how relevant digital has become in the advertising field right now. I am currently working on an account for Jack’s Rental Search, an application on Facebook that allows college students nationwide to conveniently find housing close to the university they attend. This account was interesting from the start because it was a service based solely on Facebook. There were pros and cons and understanding both sides was imperative to the growth process for the company. Our biggest accomplishment thus far was on November 23rd 2011 when we released our app for iPhone…

Self motivation when working

I have just a week left on my internship at NBC 10. At first, I did not know what to do or how the media industry work on a large organization environment, but since September, I learned much about the environment of the multi-tasking organization. Most importantly, I learned much more on responsibilities. Self motivation was very important in the job, and every employee on the company was self motivated when working. Having marketing meetings every Thursday, although the meeting was limited to a particular show, other interns collaborate actively to submit ideas in…
