Opportunities Aren’t Given They’re Made

We’ve all seen the campaign that look school pride to a new level and on Wednesday, November 28th the amazingly talented team from Neiman advertising agency ventured to North Philadelphia to give us a behind the scenes look at how they did it. First to speak was David Burden the Senior Strategic Planner on the Temple University account. He explained how Temple was way below its competitors when it came to dollars spent on advertising. Temple was “outspend and outshouted” and the higher education market is a “sea of sameness” as Burden put it.He went on to discus the marketing…

PHL: Modern Renaissance City

As a Temple Student and thus a Philadelphia resident I seem to often forget that tons of people visit Philadelphia as a vacation spot each and every day. That was until I came across PHL Partners, a “toolkit” to show the great parts of the city of brotherly love. This toolkit made by the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau is an open-source platform that shares the unique stories of Philadelphia. This advertising effort is working towards associating Philadelphia as a “modern renaissance city” by creating a montage of shots throughout the city highlighting the uniqueness Philly has to offer. The…

Intern Promotions DO Exist!

After about two months of being at my internship, I was promoted (without pay) to an editor of one of my company’s websites. I-g Creative is a marketing and online publishing company with about five different websites on different topics and areas of our work. Each of these websites are also heavily dependent on their social media presence and the content produced by employees. When I started interning with i-g Creative, my responsibilities were to attend and research events throughout Philadelphia so that I could take pictures and write articles about them to be posted on their sites and sent…

Finding a Mentor

It’s no secret that the business world is primarily dominated by men. This fact is especially evident when you look at the number of women in executive positions compared to men. While statistics vary, the ratio is around 1:10. What does that say about the amount of success a woman can hope to achieve in business? Do we have to work ten times as hard as men? It’s daunting to be a woman in such an unequal marketplace. That’s why as an intern, I’ve sought mentors in the workplace to help me reach my potential. Research done by the American…

Laughing While Learning with the Braithwaite Crew

I began interning at Braithwaite Communications at the end of August.  Braithwaite is a Branding, PR and Marketing firm located at 1500 Walnut St.  I took on a confidential crisis project on my first day and from then on I knew that I wouldn’t be doing any irrelevant work.  The Account Executives are great at what they do and their great habits of doing their job efficiently and following with their clients has rubbed off on me. Let me give you all a view into an average day working under one of the most respected men in the PR world, Hugh Braithwaite, CEO of Braithwaite Communications. I get to…

Philadelphia Magazine Party with Carson Kressley

This semester, I interned with I-g Creative.  In the beginning of the internship, one of the most exciting thing I got to do was go to a magazine party with Carson Kressley…. well not with him, but he was there! To be completely honest, I was very scared because this was my first BIG event.  I was supposed to go to the Philadelphia Magazine Cover Party and take photos.  After, I had to write about my experience at the party.  Other than that, I did not have any solid information about what I was supposed to do. When I arrived,…

Amazing Accomplishments Already Made, but the Journey is Far From Over

We have just passed through week 4 of actually working in the classroom with students at Kensington CAPA, excluding the weeks off for Columbus Day and the hurricane. Obviously we have hit a few road bumps and obstacles, another being Veterans Day this coming Monday. Despite all that has been thrown in our way, the kids still show up with brilliant, exciting ideas week after week. We are exactly one month away from the final presentation, and while we have made serious progress we are far from finished. By the final presentation date there is much I want us, Kensington…

Philadelphia Flyers Internship

When I first got hired as a intern with the Philadelphia Flyers, I expected an experience to be very different than the one I am having because of the current lockout state. I was hired as a game night promotions intern, which means, that we would attend all the home games and set up promotions and advertising during the games, enhancing the fan experience would be our main task. However, now because of the lack of a signed contract, I was giving a chance to explore all of the different aspects of the business and marketing side of sports. I…

I heart Chemicals.

The word Chemical can be scary, unless you have done your research. I spent the entire summer researching chemicals at my internship. I became consumed with chemicals.  Researching chemicals that I could not pronounce, I found myself conducting more research to learn more information about each. I learned that we all need chemicals in our daily lives.  Chemicals are needed for every one of us to survive.  To even say chemicals are toxic is almost like saying people are bad. Some are. Most aren’t. It depends. Here are some facts that I learned about chemicals while working this summer. Mostly…

Thing that can go wrong… just might go wrong on live TV

I am the Programming Intern for Sprout, a 24 hour preschool channel based out of the Comcast Building in Philadelphia. I spend three days a week at Sprout, and at least one of these days is spent as the Production Assistant (PA) on their live show. The Sunny Side Up Show (SSU) airs live, every day, out of the Sunshine Barn (the studio) with Chica (preschool chicken puppet) and one of the four hosts. The show goes live at 8:50am and ends at 12pm. The show is laid out as an interstitial, so it airs in between other shows and…

Life Long Lessons That Build Resumes as well as Character

I’m Mallory Sullivan, an Account Management Ad major and my first taste of an agency upstaged all my expectations and truly blew me out of the water. My experience as a media intern at Lev Lane Advertising has reinforced that determination, time management and persistence pay off to obtain a job. This internship has further instilled these qualities in me so that I can be confident in my abilities and experience to be rehired elsewhere or promoted to a paying position. Secondly, and maybe the most important lesson I gained from my involvement at Lev Lane, is to never pass…

From October 31 through November 21, 2012 Tyler School of Art’s Juniors will be displaying their Restaurant Identity Projects in the Tyler School of Art Atrium. This project showcases the designs of first year designers at Tyler as they develop a complete brand identity for a restaurant straight from their imagination. The students were to create a theme, name, logo, and collateral for the show which was judged by Debbie Millman the Brand Queen and President of the design division at Sterling Brands. I had the privilege of visiting the exhibition earlier this week and took some photos to share,…

Target’s Deals Duet

Black Friday is right around the corner which means lines wrapped around the building, security trying to prevent people from trampling each other, and yes those oh so sweet holiday discounts. As the days draw nearer I couldn’t help but notice the ever popular catchy Target commercials. I’m sure you remember Maria Bamford the “Crazy Target Lady” who trained for the 2010 and 2011 Black Friday shopping spree. If you don’t heres a quick preview to refresh your memory. She was a favorite not only around Black Friday but even more so during December as she sang down the card…

Small in Size, Big in Creativity – i-g creative

This past semester I have been interning at i-g creative, a small company in Northern Liberties thats work encompasses the entire creative realm. There’s advertising, marketing, photography, event planning, graphic design, online publishing, public relations and…I think I’ve gotten my point across. The company, although tiny in size doesn’t limit themselves. I’ve learned during my time here so far, that it doesn’t take a big company with a lot of money to do amazing work: it comes down to the people. I have the chance to work closely with the full time employees there and their dedication to their work…
