DIY: Professional Skill Building

I have learned a lot about the advertising/communications industry as an advertising student at Temple University.  I’ve gained many useful skills for (hopefully) helping me achieve a successful career as a professional in communications, mostly through classwork and homework. I am ashamed to say it wasn’t till recently, when I began my internship, that I realized how much I can learn on my own , independent of my classes and classwork.  For example, I have a copy writing track in advertising, so naturally I was never required to learn design programs like Photoshop, this became a problem when the agency…

The Most Interesting Voicemail In The World

Everyone knows the Most Interesting Man in the World but not many know of his parrot “who has learned to mimic his every vocal nuance” on his voicemail. Yup, you heard correct  Dos Equis has a new mural advertising for the Most Interesting Man’s voicemail on the side of Diablo’s Cantina in Las Vegas. The ad states, “Looking for an interesting time? Call 1-888-780-7665”. The caller can then get a slew of fantastically fun responses from the Interesting Man himself including various jokes about bachelorette parties, out-of-control blimps, blackjack-playing otters and low-fat blueberry muffins. This advertising is a genius addition…

The “Gangnam Style” Sensation

Last month South Korean rapper Psy’s Gangnam Style set a Guinness World Record for most likes on youtube in just three months with over two hundred million times. The viral sensation has taken off in the United States as well as inspired a dance craze of fans reenacting the video. Oddly enough, Psy is a pitchman in South Korea and markets a variety of products including Cass light beer, LG’s mobile service, Samsung kimchi refrigerators, and an energy drink. With the overwhelming popularity of Gangnam Style in the United States it’s interesting to see what brands will choose him to…

Sell, Sell, and ReSale some more…

Since my internship is unique, in the sense that it doubles as my job, I often end up playing two roles: one of a Sales Associate, and the other as Director of Advertising and Marketing. Up to this point, my job as Director of Advertising/Marketing has been mostly to maintain awareness of our boutique. However, we recently relocated to a different area, which present me with some of the following challenges: -re-branding as a high-end boutique -communicating with a new audience -making aware to our existing audience that we have relocated -bringing our old audience along with us, and maintaining…

The AD industry: Stress, but Great Rewards

Throughout my whole experience as an account service intern at Tag Strategies, the internship has taught me how valuable it is to apply the knowledge you learned from the classroom into the real world. It has also taught me that every branding firm and agency is different. Whether its big, small, or medium sized, each agency has a different goal. What I really like about Tag Strategies is its mission in finding the “It” factor in every client. What will make each product differentiate itself from other competitors? My advice? Stay on top of current events and trends. A Youtube…

Party Like It’s 1929

For the past couple of months I’ve been an intern at a Philadelphia food tour company called (oddly enough) City Food Tours. The company sells tours around different neighborhoods in Philadelphia that involve not only sight seeing and history lessons but also savoring  the eclectic foods our city has to offer. There are other companies like it in the US (including an affiliate in New York City owned by the sister of Philly’s CFT owner) but there is none like it in Philadelphia proper. So far, my time here has been quite interesting. My main tasks involve tour promotion, tour…

Coming Out Party At: I-g Creative

This past semester, I have been interning at I-g Creative.  I-g Creative is “an entertainment marketing and online publishing agency specializing in the creation and management of online networks and communities.”  I received this offer in the summertime and I was more than thrilled to continue my studies at an actual agency. I-g Creative promote their clients through social media, designs and events.  It is a fairly new agency geared towards the local community and I was attracted by that because I love Philly. Tonight, they are having a coming out party at their new office in Northern Liberty, 1021 N.…

Sandy & Social Media

Unfortunately this past week the East Coast experienced the wrath of the super storm Sandy. Leaving millions of people without power and thousands without homes, the social media frenzy began growing in size alongside the hurricane.  It was no surprise that the twitterverse and news feeds were exploding with breaking news coverages, updates from the shoreline, and support from the entire nation. One New Jersey resident I spoke to reported that the only way he got his news was via Twitter on his smartphone and that is when it occurred to me to research just how big a role social media…

Marketing PHL, Discovering PHL

Before I started my senior year here at Temple, I came to the sad realization that I didn’t know nearly enough about the city I’ve been living in for three years. What is NoLibs? Where is NoLibs? Can I even name half of the other neighborhoods? I needed to branch out from campus and my urban exploration was well overdue. That was what most compelled me to take a Marketing/Communications internship at the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau (PCVB), because they are the official tourism promotion agency for the city of Philadelphia. At the PCVB, I have been learning so much…

TED: Ideas Worth Spreading

As my December graduation draws nearer I find myself being bombarded with advice to get the upper hand on entering the world of advertising. I am sure you have heard it is extremely important to keep up with news in the advertising world about what campaigns brands are executing and which agencies are taking on new clients but I feel that taking some time out of the day to listen to TED talk or two on your way to class can be more beneficial and inspiring than all the rest. So what is TED you ask? It is a nonprofit…

Release Your Inner Bond

We’ve all been there, sitting in our advertising classes trying to think of some unique way to promote brand awareness or sell the product.
