Life as an Intern: What I Learned

As an advertising student, fashion enthusiast, and career driven individual, my internship has helped me realize things not only about the industry, but life as well. It’s crucial that the place you decide to intern reflects your interests and your career goals. Before even applying, ask yourself, “Is this a place where I would want to work (after graduation)?” Hopefully, the answer is yes. If not, do your research, ask around, and find a company that best represents you. Secondly, don’t be afraid to speak up. I’ll admit, in the beginning I was shy and didn’t always voice my opinions.…

Internship Spring 12

I’ve been interning at an online marketing agency by the name of Flying Point Media in NYC; I help out in the SEO/SEM department. When I started there, it definitely felt like I hit the ground running because I quickly adapted and learned the general process of what I would be helping with and also what exactly I would be doing. In the beginning it was for a certain client, which was not very complicated, and since then we have been working with another client which is more tricky and a bit complicated. Nonetheless I have been enjoying seeing what…

Advertising Outside of an Agency: Retail Displays

Over the course of 15 weeks during my spring semester, I spent every Wednesday and Friday on the fourth floor studio that many people don’t even know exist. In this 1800’s mansion, winding staircases and large fireplaces help give the space in which clothing and the large scale displays alike, life. Taking the ride up the elevator into the art rooms on the fourth floor started my new journey as an intern at Anthropologie in Rittenhouse Square. Getting up early isn’t something I was used to, so pulling myself out of bed at 6am wasn’t something I had done since…

Learning to Walk the Walk

My name is Carly Tokarski, and throughout the past three months I have been interning with Maiden Media Group located in Old City, Philadelphia as an Account Management intern.  Starting out, my idea of an internship was an experience filled with filing papers, grabbing coffee, and doing all the not-so-great busy work that no one else wanted to do.  To my surprise, within my first few weeks of being at Maiden, I was assigned as the Account Manager for a non-profit organization, The Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger and their upcoming Walk + Run Against Hunger.  The work the other interns…

Last Day at KHI

Yesterday was my last day at KHI and it was a sad but exciting day. I was excited it was my last day because it meant the semester was over but at the same time my time at KHI has taught me a lot and I have learned so much from them. The people at KHI from day one were the most welcoming people I have ever interned with. They wanted to help me out in any way possible and help me to absorb as much as I could in my short 16 weeks there. While there I got to…

And now it’s the end.

I’ve been interning at Group Two Advertising since January, and now it’s the end.  It has been a long journey, but it’s been educational, interesting, and helpful.  Educational because of the new things I have learned about social media, interesting because there were many tasks I was asked to do that I was unsure about, and helpful because it taught me about what I want to do in the near future. Recently, the work load has increased because they are receiving more and more clients, and performing more and more tasks for each client.  So instead of just focusing on…

Advertising an event with IG-Creative

Recently with IG-Creative’s client, Philadelphia Mans Basketball League (PMBLeague.com), we planned their Season 3 Draft Night at Ladder 15 on 15th and Chestnut. We were given the task of creating a flyer, promotion and creating a Facebook event for the draft night. I was also called to help out with set up and running of the event for PMBL. The creative aspect went smoothly. Because of the recent sponsorship by And 1 basketball company, the first draft of the flyer that PMBL loved, had to be changed a few times. Dealing with school and finals coming up, then also getting…

Keep Thinking!

My internship at Maiden Media Group this semester has been nothing short of amazing.  Not only did my experience provide me with a whole new outlook on what internships are all about, but it helped me to realize where my strengths and weaknesses lie, what I like (…and what I don’t), and a better idea of where I really hope to end up after graduation.  My main supervisor, Janeane Tolomeo, told me something really important… and I won’t forget it anytime soon.  She said to me, “It’s really important to remember that Account Managers need to do a lot more…

The Magazine Vol. 2

Interning at Philadelphia Style Magazine,  can be a lot of work at times, but does come with perks. For the past month or so we have been putting together everything needed for the May/June issue of the magazine. This issue has the actor, Jason Statham, on the cover. How Philadelphia Style picks its cover models is by choosing a celebrity that has something to do with our fine city of Philadelphia. This may be anywhere from growing up in the area to working in it. Jason Statham recently finished shooting his new movie Safe, which has many scenes shot in…

Clear Channel Broadcasting: Radio 104.5

At the beginning of my internship I had no idea what to expect. I didn’t know if I wanted to get into radio. In fact, I had no idea what I wanted to do after graduation. I chose this internship because I thought it would be fun and I’d enjoy it. Well, after a semester at Clear Channel, I was right. I had a lot of fun and I enjoyed the experience so much that I plan to go back in the Fall. I worked with Wendy Rollins, Radio 104.5’s Assistant Program Director for the majority of my time at…

Internship at Harmelin Media

Harmelin Media is one of the largest media planning firms in Philadelphia area. I was always interested in the media planning industry, thus this was a perfect opportunity. With real hands-on work, I was able to get valuable experiences. Everyone is so nice and approachable. My direct supervisor always tried to give me something to do so I won’t be left alone without any work. From that, I gained valuable experiences and insights that how the advertising media planning industry works, and how this experience functions in the society. This was a valuable experience that one cannot achieve in other places.

Thinking of the Future.

So as this semester comes to an end, I began to think about my plans for the summer. I had a great experience with my interning at IG-Creative and I talked to my mentor Chris Steward about staying for the entirety of the summer. He welcomed the idea. Because of the requirement of me being in the office a minimum of 15 hours to be paid for my time, I decided to quit my job at Express, and open up the time to something that will help me with my future. While being at IG-Creative I saw that they have…

Radio 104.5: Working Live @ Five and Studio Sessions

At Clear Channel, I have had the opportunity to meet several bands, big and small. I worked with the assistant program director, Wendy Rollins, to put on Live @ 5 on Fridays. Each Friday, a local band comes into the station to perform on live radio in the iHeartRadio Theatre. I greet the bands and help them load any equipment they have brought with them. I make sure they are on track to sound check in a timely manner so they will be ready to go live at 5pm. Later, I bring the band’s guest list to Clear Channel’s receptionist.…

Winning large accounts

Harmelin Media has various accounts that range from automotive to insurance companies. For Ford Fiesta, the firm was able to turn around the sales by planning which media to advertise in, and by refurnishing the direction of the advertisement. Also, by targeting young African Americans for BET awards on specific mediums, the firm was able to obtain the #1 cable award show title, guiding them to the peak. Also engaging on various radio buying tactics, the company  has lot of potential and future.
