“Adobé Fotoshop” Parody Mocks Fashion Industry

California film maker Jesse Rossen was inspired to create this funny-yet-tragically-true Photoshop parody, titled “Adobé Fotoshop” after seeing an overly dramatic and quite obviously re-touched wrinkle remover infomercial late one night. Rossen, through creative direction and sarcasm, describes Photoshop as a “beauty industry secret”, and something that “after just one application will give you results so dramatic, they’re almost unreal…-istic.” The parody also goes on to name the key tools used in airbrushing as if they were regular beauty products that can be purchased at a drug store: Healing brush to target blemishes, Hue/Saturation to alter your hair, skin and eye…

Design Love Fest

Design Love Fest  is one of those blogs I  check daily, and have found that the designer Bri Emery can be found pretty much EVERYWHERE in the blog world. She is somehow connected to most of my favorite blogs, which you will probably hear about most of them right here on AdLib. “Designlovefest was created in 2009 out of Bri’s own obsession with type and images, and is, in fact, where the two go to totally make out.  DLF rapidly became a daily read for over ten thousand people, thanks to Bri’s exquisitely curated layouts featuring bright colors and fabulous…

Chris Sisarich, Photographer

I’d like to introduce you to a photographer that I would personally LOVE to meet or work for, but unfortunately (for me) is located in New Zealand. Chris Sisarich has a mix of art photography and advertising photography which I find both to be beautiful. I usually am not a fan of most advertising photography, but his is a work of art. His photographs are dreamlike and make you feel like you are in another world. He has worked on several accounts including Car manufacturers, Airlines, Tourism ads, Drink Companies, and much more.  But his landscapes are my favorite! Also,…

Boost Your Confidence

Let me start off by saying that I am a man and I don’t mean to offend or judge women. I came across a magazine that typically women enjoy. People Magazine is a magazine designed for the latest gossip and news of celebrities and people that we consider important. On the current issue of Peoples Magazine (February issue) with the cover of Heidi Klum, I saw an advertisement that caught my attention. I don’t exactly know how complicated a pregnancy test is because I thought that you just pee on one side and it tells you the results in the…

K.I.S.S: Keep It Simple, Shoppers

You treat yourself to a well-deserved shopping spree and are totally satisfied with your retail therapy finds, only to discover an amazing coupon in your inbox and/or mailbox a few days later for the exact store you just blew your last paycheck in. We’re  left with two options at that point: a) Dispose of the coupons immediately so no one else can benefit from them, OR b) Take the coupons and receipt back to the store in an attempt to get some cash (or credit) back. Either way, its not a situation you’re happy to find yourself in. Ever. JCPenny has…

Kinfolk Magazine

“Kinfolk is a growing community of artists with a shared interest in small gatherings. We’ve created Kinfolk as our collaborative way of advocating the natural approach to entertaining that we love” – Kinfolkmag.com I love this idea of simple art. The community of artists that contribute to Kinfolk are doing it for one reason and one reason only, because they love spending time together. They post about things that they are doing, and create beautiful images out of it. They are proving that art can just be a way of life. Take a look around the Kinfolk website because I guarantee something will trigger…

How Much is Too Much?

As creative individuals we always face challenges with different requirements with our schoolwork as well as our careers. We need to be flexible in order to fit in certain subjects into advertisements and layouts. We must provide the right amount of information but also make it look interesting enough to get people’s attention. We all know the infamous Volkswagen beetle advertisement with the use of white space. Created in 1959, they used a white space effectively to create depth and an interesting perspective. As designers, we need to choose the right design and layout with images as well as copy.…

3191 Miles Apart

3191 Miles Apart is a blog started by Maria Alexandra Vettese and Stephanie Congdon Barnes. Both Photographers, Art Directors, Stylists, and Designers. The two creatives met back in 2005 and in 2007 started their first project of diptych photographs: “A year of mornings”, followed by  “A year of evenings”. “A year in mornings: 3191 miles apart” eventually got published, and is now the only place we are able to view the photographs. In 2010, they decided to take their series to a quarterly magazine print format, and post weekly on the blog. As a photographer myself, I love this idea of capturing the…

GoDaddy To Tone Down Super Bowl Ads?

GoDaddy can certainly be considered one of the many memorable and expected brands that advertise during the Super Bowl each year. The company, a web domain hosting site, has become well-known for their racy, often borderline sexually inappropriate ads, even if it means people don’t understand what GoDaddy is exactly until they visit the website. For years I watched these commercials without the slightest interest or understanding of what was actually being advertised. However, in a turn of events, GoDaddy’s brand recognition has actually been working against them outside of the Super Bowl time slots. The company has been turned…

Future of Dolce & Gabbana

We all know that high-end fashion print advertisements seem to have nothing to do with fashion. They usually portray bunch of people doing random things that seem to make no sense what’s so ever. For example, Louis Vuitton has print advertisements of people in exotic places laying down or doing things that you don’t really see in regular fashion advertisement. In my quest to investigate these high-end fashion advertisements, I looked through the February issue of Gentlemen’s Quarterly (GQ). I came across an advertisement that caught my eye. Dolce & Gabbana is known for creating print advertisements that are random…

H +M Bends It Like Beckham

Its that time of the year again: the 2012 Superbowl is approaching, and sports fans and ad geeks alike are getting ready for the biggest Sunday TV event of the year. Generally, we can expect big names from car brands, web domains, and a slew of other food and beverage brands with enough bling to nab a 30 second spot for millions of dollars a piece. This year, Swedish fashion retail company H&M will be making an appearance as one of the first commercials of the big game, starring none other than the insanely handsome European soccer star David Beckham. As…

La Redoute’s Questionable, Yet Very Naked, Mistake

When creating good advertising, we are taught that it is of the upmost importance to consider our target audience’s feelings, and what their reaction may be to what we put out there. So, when French powerhouse fashion retail company La Redoute published a photo of four children in La Redoute swimwear on a beach with a completely naked man in the background, its no surprise the “mistake” caused quite a stir. The first question that comes to mind is, of course, how could this possibly have gone unnoticed by the company? How many people did it take to look at…

Exposure and the Benefits of It All

So culturally, as a Jamaican American, I wanted to bring awareness to a room(s) full of ethnicities about the Advertising industry. I wanted to bring to them another option for a career choice that they may never hear of and that may even utilize their talents a whole lot better than another industry can. Unfortunately, the reality is, that there are many circumstances that present everything but opportunity to minorities. So the simple fact that someone, like myself, can come to someone and educate them on a possible option that can benefit their future greatly is almost like a blessing…

Go Eat Lunch

If I were to pass on one piece of advice, which I received during my semester-long internship, it would be to go eat lunch. During my first week, my supervisor told me to go eat lunch with some of my colleagues from the firm. Whether or not this was his way of getting me out of his hair is something, I may never know. Regardless, eating lunch with my co-workers turned my internship into a networking springboard for my career. At the onset, the task was daunting. A week into my internship, I sat down at a lunch table with…
