Dove ‘Real Beauty’ Campaign

Dove, famously known for using real women displaying confidence in their own skin, is continuing to reinvent female-based marketing with its new Real Beauty Sketches Campaign. Dove has hired artists to create two sketches of women. One sketch, the woman describes herself and the artist sketches her from the description. The second sketch, a complete stranger describes her to the artist. The resulting pair of sketches completely differed. The women describing their own looks often focused on the negatives they saw in themselves instead of the natural beauty that the other person described.

The Real Beauty Sketches Campaign is trying to show women that they are their harshest critic. One participant after seeing both of her sketches confessed: “I should be more grateful for my natural beauty. It impacts the friends that we make, the jobs we apply for, how we treat our children. It impacts everything.” The campaign strives to address the way that women see themselves. The overall message of the campaign says: “You are more beautiful than you think.”

The sketches above are of the same woman. The left sketch is how she described herself; the right is how she was described by a complete stranger.
