Why didn’t you respond to my TXT?

As indirect communication steadily becomes the standard form of communication these days, it is imperative that businesses and advertisers adapt to remain relevant in the consumer’s mind. A surefire way to lose a customer, in this new era of digital communication, is to overlook engaging in conversation–especially if the consumer has targeted you for discourse. Twitter celebrated its 5th anniversary this week, and as its user base continues to expand, brands and businesses continue to proliferate its interface. A mistake that is commonly made by these brand operated accounts, is the lack of response to user inquiries and ideas. This is a blunder that shouldn’t…

A history of the World in 100 Seconds

A simple use of geographic coordinates and wikipedia articles provides us with this simple animation. Displaying what looks like exploding random dots, is actually the location of large amounts of human progression. “Many Wikipedia articles are tagged with geographic coordinates. Many have references to historic events. Cross referencing these two subsets and plotting them year on year adds up to a dynamic visualization of Wikipedia’s view of world history.” My only concern with this video is its accuracy. Then again when looking at the facts, they only used 14,238 events with locations. Therefore it isn’t something you should swear by. Nonetheless,…

The Greatest Movie Ever Sold

I should clarify that the full title is: “POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold.” Delightfully meta, right? Master of documentaries Morgan Spurlock is back and this time he’s taking aim at the marketing / advertising industries at large. Spurlock’s documentaries are always a lot of fun, so I’ll definitely be checking this out. It’s having a limited theatrical release in April- so keep your eyes peeled on the Ritz movie theaters throughout Philly. I can guarantee every advertising student within the next 10 years will watch this at least once within their curriculum. I’m just bitter that…

CoDesign: Eight Things Stand-Up Comedy Teaches Us About Innovation

My Favorite Standup- Louis CK (not for the faint of will). I’m a huge fan of stand-up. I think some the most creative and insightful people come out of it. It’s a great medium to look to as writers for inspiration and motivation. So much advertising is based on humor anyway, might as well learn from the best. Anyway, I came across this article on FastCoDesign.com about “Eight Things Stand-Up Comedy Teaches Us About Innovation.” I’ll list the eight things here, but definitely check out the site HERE for more details. 1. Know Your Audience, Then Ignore Their Advice 2.…

Finished my test!

My name is Jin and I have been here at Two 1 Five Design Group for couple of weeks. I have been in training for a bit and getting tested on some of my skills. My supervisor has assigned me a test to see if I could handle some of the tasks therefore, he wanted me to make a couple of newspaper ads, a couple of business cards, and social media pages for my mom’s store. I think he wanted to see if I knew how to use the programs and tools and such. So, I’ve been working on them for a while with actual real work at…

Make yourself more valuable to the organization!

Interning at the Avenue of the Arts (a non-profit organization) has proven to be an exciting and full-filling position.  I’m working under the Marketing Coordinator and the Executive Director.  Right now, we’re working to create presentations to inform businesses of who we are, what we do, and how we can partner with them to benefit both parties involved.  Since it’s a small office, I get to be involved in this process and I’ll be helping them to present our partnership opportunities. What’s great about where I work is that the two women I work under are not incredibly familiar with…

Oh man, I’m about to graduate and I still need an internship

We’ve all been there. It seems like every other major just has to show up for class, do the work, and leave. But for advertising majors, the ultimate test comes when we have to complete an internship. And, as most of us know, no amount of 1-2 page essays or weekly commercial critiques can prepare you for actually having to do these things in real life, with real people, and their real money. But take a deep breath, because although it may be daunting, interning is one thing that sets our major apart from the rest and gives us potential.…

It’s a Pleasure to See Me

Hello my name is Hannah Webster and I am currently interning at the Temple University Office of Sustainability. You may have seen the ad on the left around campus.  Well, I created it. So far, I have created fliers, banners, and ads for the office promoting campus sustainability week, RecycleMania, and guest speaker, Van Jones. One event so far that the Office is going to host is former adviser to President Obama and environmental activist, Van Jones. He is coming to Temple this Tuesday, March 29th at 7pm in the Temple Performing Arts Center. The campaign that I made for…

Bubble wrapping a typewriter

The title of this blog is very unusual, much like my internship experience at Quaker City Mercantile. I started interning at QCM in October and had no idea what the experience would be like. This was my first internship, and although I do well in my classes being out in the real world is totally different. Everyone at the agency is very nice and willing to assist me. The office is beautiful yet quirky with wallpaper in the bathroom with black and white faces all over it making it look like people are watching you. I love the unexpectedness of…

I Wish This Was My Idea

This project is the idea of Candy Chang: “Many cities are full of vacant storefronts and people who need things. My New Orleans neighborhood is still without a full service grocery store. So I made these fill-in-the-blank stickers to provide an easy tool to voice what we want, where we want it. Just fill them out and put them on abandoned buildings and beyond.” This project is beyond mind blowing. It is simple and effectively allows the neighborhood to voice their civic input. Check out the full gallery for this project and Candy’s site here.

‘Hardcore’ History Ads by The Smithsonian

The bottom reads: “Historically Hardcore.” What a great angle- especially coming from an institution as regarded as the Smithsonian! Check out two other examples on the most excellent Behance Network. Update: I wrongly appropriated these ads to the Smithsonian, when in fact they were done as spec by the very talented Jenny Burrows while at the Creative Circus. Her site can be found at Just goes to show the amount of professionalism and quality excellence that should be included in your portfolio!

Social media and the earthquake in Japan

After the earthquake in Japan last Friday, social media like Twitter and Facebook helped people in Japan communicate with one another and those outside of the country despite the chaos. Phone lines and wireless service had been disrupted throughout the country, and many found the best way to find out the location of their friends and family was by looking at their Twitter accounts. Even the United States Department of State recommends that “where possible, you may be able to contact family members using text message or social media such as Facebook or Twitter” in their Japan Travel Alert, while…

Vanmoof Bicycles

Some may call them ugly, some may call them elegant, some may call them innovative, and some may call them euro. I think the Vanmoof Bicycle is all of the above and then some. Created in Belgium, these bikes have everything the urban rider needs. Seriously there isn’t one complaint I have about these bikes. They are strictly designed for the urban rider with all of the luxuries and necessities that you would pay extra for. These well designed mobiles include: lightweight aluminum tubes the highly advanced solar powered LED light system built inside the frame no cables (coaster brakes…
