My Tribune to Photoshop.

Revel Print Ad1

I continued to look through Philadelphia Magazine and I came across an advertisement for a new resort in Atlantic City called Revel. The advertisement caught my attention because the advertising was very different. It had 6 series of advertisement focusing on the different parts in the resort. It has a main advertisement that shows different parts that relate to this specific resort. As you turn the pages you can see the campaign with different images and copy.

I Guess Copy is Really Important.

Temple Heart Center Ad

This week, I took a look at Philadelphia Magazine. Philadelphia Magazine is a location-based magazine filled with all the different things that are going around in Philadelphia. It includes large amounts of advertisements for companies that are around the Philadelphia district. When I was looking through the magazine, I came across an advertisement for Temple Heart Center, specializing in heart surgery. If you see the advertisement, you see the layout is divided in half by an image of a man and some copy on the bottom. This advertisement caught my attention because the photo they chose was kind of odd. First my initial thought was, breast cancer. Even though men don’t usually get breast cancer (or not at all), it just seemed odd that they decided to choose a picture that has a man focused on his chest. I know that’s where the heart is located but the image seemed weird.

History Repeats Itself.

Scion IQ Print Ad

This week I took a look at GQ April 2012 issue (the “special issue”). In it, there are tons and tons of advertisements and things that men need in the year 2012. When looking through the magazine, I found something really different. I came across a 1 page spread advertisement for Scion IQ. I never actually saw the car myself, but from the looks of it, it looks tiny. I guess through their research to find a way to campaign their vehicle, I think this question came up. Because the car is so small, doesn’t it seem like if you get into an accident once, you might get killed? I think that’s why they created this campaign for their airbags. If you see the spread, you can see that the car features 11 airbags.

It’s Complicated

GQ Layout April 2012

I continued to look through the April issue of GQ magazine. The “special issue” consists of 100 different “hot” things in the year 2012. They have everything from all the best clothes to tips on how to do everything better. I’ve been looking through the magazine layouts for GQ for years and when they tend to have a lot of information packed into an issue, it kind of looks overwhelming.

Glamour Magazine April 2012

Cosmopolitan Magazine April 2012

I was walking around this past weekend and saw on the newsstand an interesting magazine cover. I talked about this in the past but I constantly see magazine companies playing around with their magazine covers. The Glamour Magazine has issued their April 2012 issue with Lauren Conrad with untraditional looking magazine covers. Usually we see magazine covers to be more organized or possibly chaotic but we don’t usually see magazine covers like the one from Glamour Magazine.

Sex Sells. Right?

After looking at the Glamour Magazine cover, I was thinking about something. Nudity. We see from time to time magazine covers with nudity. I understand that sex does sell and it gets the reader to buy the product. But my initial thought was that, why would there be nudity of women in a magazine cover for women. (and for men as well) So I started digging around and I remembered couple nude magazine covers.

Detail Magazine Advertisement

Ray Ban Previous Campaign

I continued to look through Detail Magazineand found something interesting and very different. I don’t know if any of you followed Ray-Bans print advertisements but they had series of Ray-Ban campaigns. There had series of interesting campaigns done by the brand Ray-Bans but in the Detail Magazine, I came across an advertisement for sunglasses and it seemed a bit off.

A Good Kind of Sweat

Gillette Print Ad

This week, I took a look at the April 2012 issue of Detail Magazine. In this magazine I found an advertisement that I’ve seen many times before. I was thinking about whether or not I should talk about this advertisement but I am in a very simple advertisement kind of mood. So, the advertisement that I am talking about is for Gillette body wash and deodorant. It’s their odor shield line where it’s meant for people who sweat a lot. Men are prone to sweating a lot because most of us are very active. We play sports and are constantly at the gym trying to look good.

Target Print Ad

This week I decided to take a look at Women’s Health magazine. I don’t particularly look at Women’s Health but I decided since I looked through Men’s Health, I would do the same for all the women out there. In the current issue of Women’s Health (April 2012 issue), you see Kristen Bell on the cover. When looking through the magazine, I came across an advertisement for Target.

Funny Faces

LifeSavers Mint Print Ad

I continued to look at Women’s Health this week, the April 2012 issue with Kristen Bell on the cover. I found another advertisement that I thought was cool. I rarely see advertisements for LifeSavers Mints but in this magazine I came across this ad. I thought it was really cool because I think it is their 100th year anniversary. They took the 100 years into consideration when creating this advertisement because you see that with the LifeSaver Mints, they made faces for the different time periods of the past. They focused on the important years like when people walked on the moon and when hip-hop was the trend.

Ads That Don’t Make Sense.

Geico Print Ad

This week I continued to look through GQ magazine (March issue) and came across an advertisement that seemed a bit off. We all know that little lizard from Geico. Well, in this advertisement they are using their phrase “15 minutes to see how much you can save”. In the print ad that appeared in GQ magazine, they used a creative device by comparing two different things. They said “It took forever to find those perfect shades” and comparing that to how it only takes 15 minutes to see how much you can save. They are comparing the time it takes to pick out the perfect sunglasses and to find out how you can save money by switching to Geico. When I saw this, I thought it was totally bizarre because why would they ever compare insurance and saving money to sunglasses? It’s good to compare products to show exactly what you’re trying to prove however, I don’t think this was the correct way to do so.

Effects Are Cool.

True Religion Jeans Print Ad

This week, im looking at the current issue of GQ magazine. When looking through the magazine there are tons and tons of advertisement for men’s fashion. I came across an interesting advertisement for the True Religion Jeans. In this campaign they are focusing on the patriotic essence of the brand. They chose to go with the American color red, blue and white. They are representing this patriotic feel and they incorporated that into their type as well as the image. As you can see, the man is wearing a shirt that looks as if an American flag. But the interesting part is actually the man. I thought that this was actually the shirt he was wearing but I saw his head and realized it was an effect on Photoshop.

It Takes Time to Achieve Greatness

Toyota Prius Connected Print Ad

I continued to look at Mens Health March 2012 issue and I found another advertisement that I thought was interesting. It is for the new Toyota Prius V. The campaign was created by Saatchi & Saatchi and if you go to this website you can actually see how the campaign was created. I suggest that you go see it because it’s really interesting. Their goal was to show that the Prius V has more versatility, efficiency and connectivity. That’s where these three print ads came up. They are trying to show that this car can basically do anything is for versatile, efficient and connected. They portray these three different themes with three different tag lines with different objects.

Eraser Tool?

David Beckham H&M print ad

This week I took a look at Mens Health March 2012 issue. In this issue with David Beckham on the front made me think of something. As I was looking through the magazine I came across the advertisement for H&M with David Beckham. There’s been so much buzz about this advertisement because I guess girls love him (that’s besides the point). If you check out this website, it says that the David Beckham advertisement was the most talked about on social media during the Super Bowl.

On the same issue of Us Weekly (February issue), I found another advertisement that I found interesting. It was a sweepstakes advertising for Stride and Trident gum. Well, come to think of it, it may not be that interesting however, it just caught my eye because I think they did a bad job with the image. Supposedly, Stride and Trident gum are having a sweepstakes of how you can win $50. You just buy a pack of gum and you have a chance to win $50.

Boost Your Confidence

Clearblue Logo

Let me start off by saying that I am a man and I don’t mean to offend or judge women. I came across a magazine that typically women enjoy. People Magazine is a magazine designed for the latest gossip and news of celebrities and people that we consider important. On the current issue of Peoples Magazine (February issue) with the cover of Heidi Klum, I saw an advertisement that caught my attention.

Future of Dolce & Gabbana

Dolce & Gabbana spring/summer print ad 2011

We all know that high-end fashion print advertisements seem to have nothing to do with fashion. They usually portray bunch of people doing random things that seem to make no sense what’s so ever. For example, Louis Vuitton has print advertisements of people in exotic places laying down or doing things that you don’t really see in regular fashion advertisement. In my quest to investigate these high-end fashion advertisements, I looked through the February issue of Gentlemen’s Quarterly (GQ). I came across an advertisement that caught my eye.

Building websites

Here at Two 1 Five Design Group, I’ve been working on many websites with my boss. We are currently handling and I have never learned the process of actually building the websites with coding therefore I was helping him put together research and data along with building images throughout the websites. I noticed that finding certain images for different pages was a critical role because it had to express the feeling of what that page was meant to do. For example, there was a page at Eyeland Optical and it was a page regarding their employees. Therefore, I had to search for a team of smiling optometrists. I searched for hours on many stock photo sites however, I could only find doctors smiling rather than optometrists. I think that day, I spent the whole time (about 6 hours) searching for stock photos. In the end, I did not have a choice but to hand in a photograph of doctors that could be optometrists. It was a good experience because I think dedication is important when searching for a specific material but sometimes, you have to turn to alternatives when the specific material doesn’t exist.

Finished my test!

My name is Jin and I have been here at Two 1 Five Design Group for couple of weeks. I have been in training for a bit and getting tested on some of my skills. My supervisor has assigned me a test to see if I could handle some of the tasks therefore, he wanted me to make a couple of newspaper ads, a couple of business cards, and social media pages for my mom’s store. I think he wanted to see if I knew how to use the programs and tools and such. So, I’ve been working on them for a while with actual real work at the same time. I don’t think I’m actually allowed to show the “real” work because they aren’t mine to show. Technically, I think it’s the clients ownership, so I just decided to show the business card that I made as a test. It’s been good here at Two 1 Five. Very relaxing because it’s a small office in his.. three story apartment. Because his office is in his apartment it’s kind of weird because sometimes he’s wearing his pajamas and there’s nothing wrong with being comfortable but I wonder… could I wear like a hat to work too? It’s a weird feeling because it’s like a professional job but at the same time he is such a laid back guy. But from time to time, he keeps me on my toes and makes sure I have everything correct. I realized things need to be in such detail and I need to check, check, then check again to make sure there are no errors because I’ve made errors without even realizing they were there. Overall, it’s fun and exciting!

Two 1 Five Design Group

I’ve been interning at Two 1 Five Design Group for couple of weeks now. I think it’s different from other internships because not only do you learn your responsibility but the responsibility of the whole process from start to finish. It’s basically a learning experience to teach you how to start your own business and run your own company. I’ve been learning lot of different ways to catch the eye and play with how the eye reads using contrast and other principles. The company handles more internet and paper ads rather than television. I see that there are lot of branding and advertising efforts across all of the clients he’s had. I’m still learning a lot and gaining knowledge every time I go. Trying to balance school and the internship is a bit hard but what I always have a problem with is should my internship matter more because it’s the “real world”? Who knows. . .
