I <3 Harmelin

This summer I have been serving as an intern at Harmelin Media in Bala Cynwyd. Harmelin is a full service media planning and buying company. It is one of the largest independent media agencies in the country!  This is my first internship since high school. So, I was quite nervous as the start date approached up until the first week was completed. However, everyone who works at Harmelin is a genuinely nice person. They are very laid back but also extremely hard working. They are more than willing to help interns with any questions or concerns we have, and have been…

Using Excel… to excel

My experience at Harmelin has been extremely valuable to my education. I’ve gained many new skills and have a deeper understanding of the media planning/buying processes. By far the best skill I am learning is the use of Excel (hence the title) through daily projects. Like most students, I am only really familiar with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Knowing that I was never properly taught how to use Excel, presented a huge set back for me since Harmelin uses spreadsheets for everything. This worried me a little since I am asked daily, “do I know how to this or that in Excel?” However, being…

That one time I cried when I found out I was offered this internship

What does it mean to be an intern? For some, it’s just a title to throw on their resumes, for others, it’s gaining the knowledge needed to fuel their careers. So far, my internship at Harmelin Media has been the most rewarding experience of my young life. After going through Media Planning I and enjoying every project and assignment, I knew I had finally discovered which career path in advertising I wanted to pursue. When I received the email that I was offered a media intern position for the summer, I immediately cried tears of joy. I was so excited that…

Full Circle Freshman

When you begin your college journey, you’re a freshman for the second time in your life. When you work as an intern, it’s as though you’re a freshman for the third time in your life, but better. I began my internship with the design department of Temple’s Strategic Marketing and Communications department in the middle of May. Although I haven’t been here very long, it has already been an eye opening experience for me. There are still so many things to learn in terms of programs, design tools, proofing, and even things like marketing/advertising slang that wouldn’t be possible to…

Relationships Are Everything

Hi my name is Colleen and I’m currently serving as an intern at Tai Y. Wong Law Offices. One of the biggest things I’ve learned during my internship at Tai Y. Wong Law Offices is that building and keeping relationships is a big part of any business. I’ve also learned that building and maintaining relationships is certainly a skill that will come in handy in any career path. But it is definitely a skill worth having within the advertising world. I have seen from both the client side and advertising agency side how good relationships can be beneficial. From the client side it…

Assembling Your Toolbox

In my humble understanding, we students are gathered here, attending college so we can earn our degree. A degree in your hand is said to open many doors, and I have no doubt it will. But in my three years at Temple I came to realize that, more than achieving a degree, I’m putting together a toolbox. The tools I have in my toolbox are the primary instrument for my work, which is what will differentiate me in the job market. As an Art Direction student, last semester I decided to put The Art of Infographics in my toolbox, it ended being the…

Keeping Social Media Close to Your Brand

Social networking hit its stride in 2002 with the introduction of Friendster. This Internet platform revolutionized the way people communicate, and 13 years later, we’re starting to learn how valuable social media is as a marketing tool. Since smartphones allow us to now stay connected to our social networks 24/7, eyeballs have moved away from traditional media. Now that we’re communicating with our peers in new ways, its natural that advertisers need to adapt and learn to speak to their audiences in new ways. The best advertising is colloquial, and what better place to be colloquial than on social? Since…

Purposes Bigger Than Myself

This particular post may sound like one giant cliché, but you gotta hear me out. For the longest time, I have felt a yearning and strong desire to make a difference in someone’s life. My dreams used to revolve around the thought of changing the world, but as I got older I learned that by changing one life, said act could just continuously be carried out. Then, however, upon coming to college and changing my major from journalism to advertising sophomore year, I realized that advertising is the perfect way to reach a vast audience and to encourage them to…

Benefits of Working at a Smaller Company

I stumbled upon Propulsion Media Labs at Temple University’s career fair. When I was offered an internship for the summer, I was more than ecstatic to accept. Since starting my internship at the small post-production company, I have done “typical” intern tasks such as filing papers and going on coffee runs. However, the biggest benefit of serving as an interns at a smaller company is all the hands on experience I get. I am allowed to shadow employees with their permission, one employee even taught me the basics of After Effects! I also had the opportunity to pitch social media ideas…

The Opportunity Of A Lifetime

I live and breathe Philadelphia sports, so landing an internship at SportsRadio 94WIP is a dream come true. Having just finished my third week working with Michael Barkann and Ike  Reese on their show “Mike & Ike,” I’ve already learned so much and have gained such respect and idolization for Philadelphia radio talk show hosts. Walking in on my first day, I must admit I was as nervous and excited as ever. Instantly I was introduced to former Philadelphia Eagle, Ike Reese, and prominent television talk show and radio host Michael Barkann, whom I’ve watched a million times on the…

More than just an internship

I’m Kala and I decided that I would go back to my hometown and intern at the Sapphire Salon and Spa. At first, all I thought I would be doing is sitting behind a computer designing ads while also learning all about advertising. That wasn’t the case. My supervisor, Angie, has me not only making ads, but also involved in a lot of other projects. Father’s Day is coming up and I got to set up a display in front of the store that would showcase the products that I featured in my campaign. This was something I enjoyed because…

Teamwork? Teamwork.

One of the most important things that my internship at Sapphire Salon has taught me is teamwork. Without team work there isn’t any good work being produced. In school you’re forced to work in groups with your fellow classmates and obviously you’re gaining team work experience there. However, at my internship I am gaining professional team work experience while also learning. The great thing is being able to bounce ideas off one another in order to come up with a great idea. Also, someone’s strengths can cancel out your weakness. Today, I got the opportunity to work together with another intern on…

Social Media Love

So far, my experience at ChatterBlast Media has taught me a lot. I learned more about the media industry and more about myself as well. The first thing I’ve learned is that constructive criticism is not meant to break you down, but build you up instead. It’s the editors job to catch your mistakes and to make suggestions in order to make you a better writer. Seeing corrections written all over your work can be difficult at first, but I learned quickly not to take it personally in any way. The second thing I’ve learned is how exhausting being creative…

No More Practice // No More Hand-Holding

As you sit through advertising classes as an aspiring creative, you are taught and told that working in groups is something that you will need to become comfortable with as you advance in your studies and eventually post graduation. This is completely true. However, as this was engrained into my head it also gave me a sense of comfort. This sense of comfort was founded on the idea that I would always have a group of fellow, passionate creatives to help with ideas, designs, or anything else on which I may be working. Before I started my creative design position…

The Creative Workspace // The Reality

Now, the title of this blog post may seem to have a negative connotation but that’s just one of the biggest problems with social isn’t it? This blog post is the product of a long, extensive, and exhausting creative internship experience at Red Tettemer + O’Connell Partners (RTO+P) and the amazing observations that came along with it. I jumped on board RTO+P as a creative designer after finishing my Sophomore year at Temple University. I have done creative work for The Art Directors Club of Philadelphia, National Student Advertising Competition, and a previous design internship at a small design studio,…
