Benefits of Working at a Smaller Company

I stumbled upon Propulsion Media Labs at Temple University’s career fair. When I was offered an internship for the summer, I was more than ecstatic to accept. Since starting my internship at the small post-production company, I have done “typical” intern tasks such as filing papers and going on coffee runs. However, the biggest benefit of serving as an interns at a smaller company is all the hands on experience I get. I am allowed to shadow employees with their permission, one employee even taught me the basics of After Effects! I also had the opportunity to pitch social media ideas…

The Opportunity Of A Lifetime

I live and breathe Philadelphia sports, so landing an internship at SportsRadio 94WIP is a dream come true. Having just finished my third week working with Michael Barkann and Ike  Reese on their show “Mike & Ike,” I’ve already learned so much and have gained such respect and idolization for Philadelphia radio talk show hosts. Walking in on my first day, I must admit I was as nervous and excited as ever. Instantly I was introduced to former Philadelphia Eagle, Ike Reese, and prominent television talk show and radio host Michael Barkann, whom I’ve watched a million times on the…

More than just an internship

I’m Kala and I decided that I would go back to my hometown and intern at the Sapphire Salon and Spa. At first, all I thought I would be doing is sitting behind a computer designing ads while also learning all about advertising. That wasn’t the case. My supervisor, Angie, has me not only making ads, but also involved in a lot of other projects. Father’s Day is coming up and I got to set up a display in front of the store that would showcase the products that I featured in my campaign. This was something I enjoyed because…

Teamwork? Teamwork.

One of the most important things that my internship at Sapphire Salon has taught me is teamwork. Without team work there isn’t any good work being produced. In school you’re forced to work in groups with your fellow classmates and obviously you’re gaining team work experience there. However, at my internship I am gaining professional team work experience while also learning. The great thing is being able to bounce ideas off one another in order to come up with a great idea. Also, someone’s strengths can cancel out your weakness. Today, I got the opportunity to work together with another intern on…

Social Media Love

So far, my experience at ChatterBlast Media has taught me a lot. I learned more about the media industry and more about myself as well. The first thing I’ve learned is that constructive criticism is not meant to break you down, but build you up instead. It’s the editors job to catch your mistakes and to make suggestions in order to make you a better writer. Seeing corrections written all over your work can be difficult at first, but I learned quickly not to take it personally in any way. The second thing I’ve learned is how exhausting being creative…

No More Practice // No More Hand-Holding

As you sit through advertising classes as an aspiring creative, you are taught and told that working in groups is something that you will need to become comfortable with as you advance in your studies and eventually post graduation. This is completely true. However, as this was engrained into my head it also gave me a sense of comfort. This sense of comfort was founded on the idea that I would always have a group of fellow, passionate creatives to help with ideas, designs, or anything else on which I may be working. Before I started my creative design position…

The Creative Workspace // The Reality

Now, the title of this blog post may seem to have a negative connotation but that’s just one of the biggest problems with social isn’t it? This blog post is the product of a long, extensive, and exhausting creative internship experience at Red Tettemer + O’Connell Partners (RTO+P) and the amazing observations that came along with it. I jumped on board RTO+P as a creative designer after finishing my Sophomore year at Temple University. I have done creative work for The Art Directors Club of Philadelphia, National Student Advertising Competition, and a previous design internship at a small design studio,…

Not Your Typical Law Firm

I’m Colleen and I’m currently serving as an intern at Tai Y. Wong Law Offices in Center City. While here I’m going to be their advertising representative. When I was first offered this internship I was a little hesitant about an internship with a law firm. I had never really been interested in the legal world and the dealings around it. But, I knew others that previously served as interns there and they told me that it was an amazing experience. So, I decided to trust them. During my first week, I learned that all of my previous notions about law firm advertising were wrong.…

Would You Do It For The Love?

A fear that I’ve always had as a student in the School of Media and Communication was would I be able to find a job that I love and make enough money to eat and sustain myself. Unlike many majors, there is no guarantee. However, one day as I was reading through the Advertising Listserv, a compilation of emails I usually “Mark as Read” I saw one for OogeeWoogee.com. The email said they were looking for interns to manage social media, write blog posts about Hip-Hop, politics, and everything counterculture. It was a dream come true. I had found opportunity…

Your Future Employer’s Past Self

Life is full of false barriers built almost entirely by ourselves. Lack of confidence, fear of the unknown, and skipping your morning bowl of Wheaties (seriously, comparing yourself to the cereal box cut out of an Olympic Gold Medalist charged multiple times for narcotic use does wonders for one’s self esteem) are all self inflicted fences that college students need to learn how to clear. Let’s look at these professionals that, for most students, come off as intimidating figures who hold the vice grip on potential jobs. In case you didn’t know, they all were our age once and felt exactly what we’re currently feeling.…

Advertising: Job or Lifestyle?

I tend to think about my future career as a name tag. A pre-written sticker that demands you write in one word to define your entire career. Engineer. Doctor. Journalist. Yep, all those fit just fine. Writer with lofty dreams to explore, learn, and overcome the world one adventure at a time..let me grab my fine point pen. This was, is, and will continue to be my struggle of where a professional career (I mean one where you actually earn a living. Professional Netflix Binger don’t pay no bills!) fits into where I see my life going. I can confidently say that…

Re-found Confidence

Nervous, scared, anxious. Three words that describe how I usually feel right before I start a job. However, going into my first day as the social media intern for ChatterBlast Media, I wasn’t scared, instead I was really excited. I am one of nine interns for ChatterBlast, but my position is very different from the others. I am acting as the middleman for Reading Terminal Market and ChatterBlast. It is my responsibility to make sure that the client (Reading Terminal) is always happy and kept in the loop. Reading Terminal Market attracts over six million visitors a year and is…

Brand Yourself Pt.1

As advertising majors we always hear about the importance of branding ourselves. But what does that really mean? Why do we have to brand ourselves? Isn’t just having a portfolio, resume, and Linkedin account enough? If you’re still thinking about what’s the answer, it is no. During my interview for my current internship at the design consultency PlusUs, one of the elements my creative director said that set me apart was my experience with strategy and research. Advertising is a competitive field. Our department is unique in that we are the only advertising department in the country that has four…

InsideBitcoins with P2PCryptogirl

I just had the chance to go with the company to an InsideBitcoin’s conference in NYC. @p2pCryptoGirl is my handle for networking and communicating with others in the field. There, I had the chance to meet a part time team member and venture capitalist named Jeanne and have dinner with NY’s finest in the industry. The conference was very fun and informative. A few companies had exhibits going on where they offered demos of their products and services. This experience taught me a lot about compliance and regulation involving bitcoin, and I had a chance to see some of the…

Bitcoin Internship

My internship is with CoinOutlet, Inc a manufacturer and operator of bitcoin smart kiosks. I had the opportunity this week to help create flyers and become a part of the company sponsored Lancaster Bitcoin Meetup Group. The company pays for pizza and beer, but has trouble getting people to come out in the area to these meetups. I was tasked with finding a way to get some people to join. The company has a machine in Lancaster stationed in a cafe called, 454 Grill. The owner, Leigh, allows meals to be paid in bitcoin so it was an ideal location…
