City Year Greater Philadelphia Internship

As the first of the 3 rolling admission deadlines approaches, City Year stepped into high gear to reach their quota of applications for the year. The application process isn’t easy, after 1000 applicants submitted applications last year a little over 200 were picked for this year’s service opportunity. The last couple of weeks my internship was filled with e-mailing, posting, and career fairs. Through massive e-mails, I was successfully able to set up over 20 classroom presentations and currently working on various meetings with different organizations on campus. The work I’m doing is helping to build awareness and help City…

Twitter and Copywriting

Young copywriters, heed my words, embrace that unfamiliar technology you know as Twitter. Many advertising students scoff, laugh, and sneer at the suggestion of starting a Twitter account. Why? Its simplicity? Perhaps, it’s the stigma attached to it, that the whole user base expresses insignificant moments in their daily routine to an absent audience? Who cares, right? The truth of it is, Twitter could play a significant role in your entry to a career! You want to get your foot in the door, right? Twitter is the perfect shoe to wear in keeping that entryway wedged open! I implore you…

Shakespeare and Social Media?

This semester I am interning with Temple’s English Department. You may be wondering, why are you interning with them if you are an advertising student? The English Department at Temple is trying to create a community of students, alumni, and faculty through social media. That’s where I come in. I am starting the first social media outreach in the English Dept. through Facebook. Now, we all know that Facebook is all about connections and that’s exactly what the Department wants to accomplish. By creating an online presence we hope to establish a community of people all interested in similar things.…

1991 Revisited

In 1977, The Voyager Spacecraft was sent into orbit. On this vessel of interstellar travel, there contains a golden record encapsulating human history through spoken languages, animal sounds, and musical selections. This record serves as tangible evidence of our existence to other possible intelligent life forms. If a new Voyager project were to be constructed, I see no reason why this television advertisement below shouldn’t be included. I believe this speaks well for humanity as a whole.

Calling all creatives

Think that you have what it takes to create an awesome tv spot for Red Bull? If you answered “yes,” Red Bull has a really great opportunity for you. From now until December 12th Red Bull is inviting it’s users to come up with a :30 tv spot that expresses the idea “Red Bull gives you wings.” The best part is that you don’t even have to shoot the commercial. You are able to submit and entry as a storyboard, script, illustration OR a video clip if you’re an overachiever. If you’re up to the task head on over to…

Appreciating Wallpaper

There are certain necessities in life that most of us take for granted. For example: toilet paper. I intended to rattle off multiple examples, but I think the TP reference qualifies as “nuff said.” We grow accustomed to certain everyday items, and eventually just forget how much we appreciate them. The same goes for items we rarely use, or, shall we say, download. * Charmin Bears: the perfect example of paper appreciators Since my specific position is helping maintain the Philadelphia 76er’s site, I know first hand how keeping things up-to-date is a daily and time consuming task. When it’s…

Are newspapers making a comeback?

Throughout the past few years, there has been lots of talk about newspapers as a dying media. We hear it in our classes, in media articles, and even in newspapers!  But although there has been lots of talk about print media diminishing, especially newspapers, as I learned today, newspapers are still being used! Today at Harmelin I was given the task of checking the advertising rates of various newspapers for a specific client.  I learned how newspapers and media buyers determine the rates of different advertisement spaces in newspapers and how a media buyer goes about purchasing advertising space in…

TAC: Art & Copy Screening

At this week’s meeting we did something a little bit different. It was movie night at TAC! For those who came out we got a chance to watch Art & Copy, a film about the advertising industry. It covered everything from big companies and agencies to the workers who put up billboards. Famous campaigns such as Got Milk?, Nike, Apple’s famous 1984 commercial, and the Volkswagen Beetle were featured throughout the film. I personally enjoyed the movie and was further assured on why I wanted to be in this industry. One quote that stuck out to me from the movie: “I can…

Really? Windows Phone…

“It’s time for a phone to save us from our phones.” People spend so much time on their phones they’re missing out on life. Interesting concept. I suppose Windows Phone is so fast that each of these people can do what it is they do and still have enough time left over to live. It sounds like a great idea… really. I don’t have a smart phone, so I don’t have this problem, but I will say that it piques my interest. Here’s the “mama spot.” There are a number of “baby spots” too. It’s cool that this ad…

Honest to Goodness Lunches May be Too Honest

“Honest to Goodness” is a new campaign from Healthy Choice. It demands more attention than the previous campaign with Julia Louis Dreyfus. It’s easier to sell an idea with unknowns than it is with a celebrity. What about people who don’t care for a particular celebrity? It creates an instant disconnect from the product. There’s no prior expectation with unknown actors. That’s not to say that celebrities don’t help, but the product should bare most of the liability. It should be able to stand on it’s own. What grabbed my attention was the honesty of course. In an environment where…

Prematurity Awareness Month is happening now! Look out for the purple buildings!

I am continuing to love my internship at March of Dimes.  Right now I am in my waiting period; in two weeks things will start to pick up again.  It is slow because I spent the past month continuing a project the summer intern began.  The month of November is Prematurity Awareness Month and November 17 is Prematurity Awareness Day.  The goal is to reduce preterm births and raise awareness about what a problem preterm births are.  The goal I was concentrating on accomplishing was to raise awareness about pre-term births. During the summer, the other intern called businesses around…

TAC Update: Quaker City Mercantile

This week at TAC, we had a guest speaker come from Quaker City Mercantile, a top branding agency in Philadelphia. Nicole Hutnyk, a branding manager and account manager, explained Quaker City Mercantile as an agency that covers all phases of development from packaging, multimedia, social networking, and viral. The main goal at Quaker City Mercantile is to create and sustain brands which leads to their philosophy; “A brand isn’t sustainable if it doesn’t tell a certain kind of truth”. Ms. Hutnyk also happens to be the Intern Director at Quaker City Mercantile, which offers internships all throughout the year. Internships…
