Steve Jobs: How to Live Before You Die….

Steve Jobs never graduated from college but gave an amazing commencement speech in 2005 at Stanford University. Drawing from some of the most pivotal points in his life, Steve Jobs, chief executive officer and co-founder of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, urged graduates to pursue their dreams and see the opportunities in life’s setbacks — including death itself — at the university’s 114th Commencement on June 12, 2005.

Temple Ad Club Careers in Communications Panel Discussion

So if you missed the panel discussion last Thursday on careers in communication, don’t worry I’ll catch you up on what you missed. It was a pretty great event, hosted by Lori Wilson from NBC and featured speakers from a wide variety of places: LevLane, B101 radio station, Brownstein Group, Anne Klein Communications Group and MayoSeitz. A common theme of the discussion was the importance of networking: Someone said advertising agencies are rarely represented at career fairs because, not only do they mostly hire on demand, but they usually hire based on internal referrals. Basically that’s the big secret about…

So, this guy is amazing. John Solimine is a huge name in illustration and design. With over 12 years in the biz he’s done work for Lollapalooza, the National, Fuse, NPR, the Chicago Tribune, American Express, and Nike, to name a few, (the list goes on and on), and each piece is amazingly dynamic and imaginative. His illustrations seem to tell a story in the blink of an eye; in a recent interview with Design Inspiration he revealed that that is one of the major goals with his work. The ability to evoke a strong emotional response with just a picture…

Apple Tribute logo designed by 19-year-old

A current art direction student of mine sent me an article last night that he found on Yahoo! News about a 19-year old college student who had designed an Apple logo honoring Steve Jobs. He had originally designed this logo to honor Jobs’ contributions to the industry when he had stepped down a few months back as CEO. The logo has found its way as the preferred profile pic on Ashton Kutcher’s Twitter account since Jonathan Mak Long (the artist) re-blogged it after Jobs passed away this past week as a cyber tribute. Long told Yahoo! in a Skype interview,…

Typography Posters

The project my Art Direction class is working on right now is to make a typography-driven print piece for a PSA about texting and driving. Working on it has made me realize how odd typography is as a medium, and how much I love it. The form vs. function balance is so interesting, especially in advertising-driven designs; when does readability hit the back burner in favor of shape, texture, and other elements of a really captivating image? It seems like there are never any concrete answers to that question because it depends on so many other factors, like audience, and…

Queens of the Stone Age vs. Andrew Bird

Lets talk for a second about Queens of the Stone Age. Musicians like to present their fans with a full range of experience, (and therefore merch). The band has a sound, the members have a look, and their merch is always carefully designed to a tee whether its clothes, stickers, album art, or my favorite, gig posters. I am not much into Queens of the Stone Age so I never realized this but they are the kind of band that really appreciates art. If you check out their page on gigposters.com they show 23 pages of beautiful poster art for…
