A Year Into My First Internship
Growing through my year!
Hi my name Michelle Nguyen! I am an Advertising major with duel concentrations in Brand Strategy and Research and Copywriting. I’ve been interning at Philadelphia Academies Inc. for such a long time! I am their Communications Intern, and as you may have guessed I do a lot of their communications like social media, and outreach. Walking into your first internship is nerve-wracking, but the community at PAI made me feel like I’ve been there longer.
Philadelphia Academies Inc. has been in this city since 1969, and they have made it their goal to improve student outcomes in a city that is known for their workforce and large tourism experiences.
The field that I’m in that I’m currently interning in as definitely something that I want to pursue when I graduate. I mean — being in a media and communications, I’m sure it’s not a surprise to anyone. It’s something that I excel in and I would want to show the world who I am with the media I curate. The tours that I am allowed to take like getting to tour Comcast, being inside Aramark, and just looking local murals that Philly has is an amazing opportunity that I got to have as an intern. It really opens your eyes to the many scenes that Philly has that people aren’t aware of, the Mural Arts tour that I had the opportunity to take really made me open my eyes to the various murals around the city now.
There were so many people who inspired me to work hard and people who I look up too. I got to work on real projects with deadlines, collecting real testimonies from students who were helped by PAI, doing this internship and knowing the impact that PAI has on students was inspiring on its own.
My experience at PAI was definitely not something that I would’ve expected for my first internship, I know that every year PAI has an annual gala, but I wasn’t expecting to be able to go to the gala! So it was definitely an experience I didn’t know that was going to happen. I take my work very seriously, and I’m glad that I found an internship that allowed me to grow and lets me seek out the work that I want to do.
