AIPAD photo show

This weekend I have the incredible opportunity to attend the AIPAD (The Association of International Art Dealers) Photo show in New York City. The show was held at the Park Ave. Armory and panel discussions were held throughout the day on Saturday. One of the panels I attended was “A Celebration of Franchesca Woodman”. I was extremely excited about this because her work is a big influence in mine. My work isn’t quite as eerie, but her use of space is similar to how I work. Before attending this panel, I didn’t know much about her except for the fact that she committed suicide when she was 22 years old. It is such a shame, because she was truly an amazing artist.

Now as for the Show, let’s just say it brought (small) tears to my eyes when I stood 2 feet away from Sally Mann and Vivianne Meier original photographs. There were an unbelievable amount of work up in the Armory, actually a bit overwhelming. It was so inspirational though, and made me seriously consider moving to New York in the Fall. One thing I regret throughout my college career is taking advantage of the ease of getting to New York. There are so many events at our fingertips, and I waited until my Senior year to start attending. There are also so many opportunities to see amazing work in Philadelphia. So, whenever you hear of an event, do everything in your power to attend and network.

  1. Thrilled you got to NYC and went to the show! I lived in NYC for several years (and grew up quite close to “The City” as we called it) so it’s always held a special place in my heart (awww). But really, there is so much to take advantage of both in NYC and Philly that I’m happy you mentioned for your peers to get out and experience if they haven’t already. Everyone keep their eyes peeled for DesignPhiladelphia’s year round events as well as their weeklong festival in October!

    • Sheryl, I completely agree. A friend of mine and I were talking about how there should be more opportunities (maybe temple vans/buses) to go to different events in NY. I would hope that students would take advantage of that!
