Be Persistent. Trust Me…It Works.
As a senior in college, you learn a few lessons along the way. So, let’s start from the beginning. My name is Nea Resuli, I’m a senior at Temple University and I work as an intern with the Philadelphia Union Soccer Team. I graduated high school in 2017, and attended Holy Family University for my freshmen year. In the late spring of 2018, I sparked a conversation with my sister, who has constantly supported and guided me in the right direction. I asked if I should consider transferring to Temple University because I’ll have a higher chance of finding a job in the future since it’s well-known and the advertising/marketing programs are excellent as well. She encouraged me to work hard and apply. At Holy Family University, the grading system is extremely difficult so it’s harder to pass.
I worked extremely hard, applied and got accepted into Temple University’s Marketing program at Fox. Then I transferred to Advertising my junior year of college. I struggled for 2 ½ years trying to look for an internship that fit my needs and goals. I’ve always been a soccer fan, not a huge one but it’s in my blood especially since I am Albanian. My brother and Dad both watch soccer 24/7, whether it’s USA, Barcelona, Juventus etc. My brother started to watch the Philadelphia Union soccer games a few years ago. I got really invested in 2018.
In Early 2019, I began my applications to the Philadelphia Union Team, applying for their marketing internship. I kept getting rejected but still kept going because I really wanted to work there. In July of 2021, I was offered two interviews for two different intern positions but was rejected as well. In September of 2021, I received an email regarding my application for another position (Front Office) and if I was willing to do an interview with them. I said YES, of course. I was not expecting the interview at all. Everyone around me has always said that you will receive news when you least expect it and I did not expect it at all.
Throughout this internship, I’ve learned a lot about myself and the company. I’ve gained so much confidence which is something I’ve always struggled with. I’m extremely shy so working for a soccer team with so many people surrounding me every single game was challenging. But I overcame it. Not only did I gain confidence in myself, but I also gained confidence in speaking with others. I’ve gained experience, memories and most of all, friends. I’m really grateful for it. Although, I did have issues at times, I never give up on anything, no matter how hard it is. Life has thrown many obstacles at me and I still stand tall (even when I’m at my lowest) and keep going. I recently spoke with someone and they were offering their advice to me after I told him my story.
To put it in perspective, I applied to the Philadelphia Union 7 times in the span of 2 years. To get an internship, in 2021, while a pandemic is occurring, at my dream company is incredible and a dream come true. This person that gave me advice told me that it was amazing that I did not give up and I was very persistent. I didn’t realize it was until he pointed it out. I am persistent. I really do not give up. I had a lot of setbacks but I made it through and I’m extremely proud of myself.
I hope to work for the Philadelphia Union or any sports team in the near future. I still have a lot of goals and dreams to achieve but I’m right where I want to be at the moment.
Hi Nea! I really admire your perseverance and this was really refreshing to read as someone who is also shy that you gained a lot of confidence even in a setting that can be really overwhelming to put yourself out there and talk to people. But you did it! Keep going strong because I can totally see you working for the Philadelphia Union or any sports team in the future with perseverance like that!
