DIY Or Die
I am an art director currently interning at Philly’s own Skate Jawn magazine. For those who are unfamiliar with the magazine, it is a bi-monthly skateboard magazine based here in Philadelphia with a focus on the core elements of skateboarding culture. This has been quite an unconventional internship however I am most certainly passionate about the work I have been doing over the past few weeks. Here, I am helping the team develop an artist section in the magazine where we can showcase and feature skateboard-related visual artists. I am also busy designing flyers for events.
Not only am I contributing from an advertising standpoint but I am also helping with day-to-day activities at the headquarters. As core skateboarders, part of their daily life is building DIY ramps in DIY spots throughout the city giving skateboarders a place to skate. As a skateboarder myself, I am more than happy to help pour concrete and build the ramps. Although not in the internship description, I found these tasks to be productive in the community and I have also built stronger relationships with the staff by working closely with them. Networking is crucial in the advertising world and to my surprise building these ramps has helped my career a great deal.
Photos of the ramps will be posted in my next blog post.
