Don’t be afraid to get in there: 3 reasons why you shouldn’t be afraid to capture content

Sometimes it can be intimidating or even scary to film social media content in public. This post explains why you have no reason to fear this aspect of marketing/advertising.

During my time as a Marketing intern at the Philadelphia International Airport, my supervisor said one thing to me that has always stuck, and that was “Don’t be afraid to get in there.” The first time I had to shoot social media content by myself, it involved going up to airport staff and asking them to participate. This naturally made me very anxious because I knew it was a lot to ask people who work in one of the busiest settings there is but I knew the content had to get done. So I did it and I realized that I have no reason to be embarrassed, anxious, or afraid of capturing content in public.

Here are three reasons why you shouldn’t be afraid to capture content:

1. It’s your job

You shouldn’t be afraid to do something that you’re getting paid to do or you’re expected to do per your job description. This is what we do in Marketing and Advertising. Our whole job is to brainstorm, film, and produce content of different forms.

2. No one is watching

As much as we may think people are watching our every move, they aren’t. Everyone is minding their own business, especially in a public setting. Even if they are paying attention to you, who cares? This is your job and your opportunity to show your skills.

3. You owe it to yourself

It would be a disservice to yourself to not give your internship your all and do your best. You owe it to yourself to see your full potential and break out of your comfort zone. Your future self will thank you when your portfolio is stacked with amazing work.

I know it seems easier said than done, but this mindset has helped me a lot recently at my internship. For example, today I went to record content for an Eagles activation in the airport. I was afraid to get in the way of travelers or look sketchy while filming people at the activation. After sending my supervisor the videos I had filmed, he responded with requests for other moments to capture, but he ended the message with “Don’t be afraid to get in there lol.” I took this advice a just went for it. So never be afraid to do the work you love.
