Focusing @ Focus

My name is Tara Gallagher and I am the social media intern for Focus in Bryn Mawr, PA. I create content for their Instagram, studio, and their newsletter. Social media and content creation has always interested me from a young age. I have always wanted to work in this field in some way, shape, or form.

This experience has taught me how to work collaboratively with a team. I have also learned how to properly use photoshop, Canva, and other video editing software. I have always been interested in doing the social media aspects of advertising and this internship has just solidified my interests. I truly love being creative with this role and getting to do what I think is best. Focus has given me a lot of creative freedom throughout this internship. The main goal we set out at the beginning of this internship was to broaden our clientele to college students. I have successfully done so and our numbers are up. I enjoyed working with adults who valued and trust my opinion when targeting my own age group.

Throughout this internship, I met multiple people that have inspired me. The majority of the employees run Focus as their passion project, while also working a full-time career. I discovered that I genuinely like the people that I do this internship with and work really well with them. I also discovered that you can have a career and do your passion project on the side. It is motivating to know that you can have both; a successful career and hobby.

The experience is pretty similar to what I had expected. I knew I would be working with others to create content on their social media. I wish I was more open with them in the beginning by telling them I work best when given a complete step by step of what they want. While I do like creative freedom, it wasn’t clear to me in the beginning that that is what the role entailed, but it ended up working out wonderfully! Throughout this semester, I gained experience working with a team in a real life scenario. That is something that has worried me in the future when starting my first full-time job, but this experience eased my worries. I also learned many other helpful tactics such as the pricing strategies for a business and the margins and how to operate many softwares that I will likely use in my future. I sharpened my editing and Photoshop skills and created loads of content that I can add to my portfolio. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Focus Bryn Mawr and felt spoiled and appreciated throughout the semester.
