Getting Gritty: My Internship with the Philadelphia Flyers

Ever wondered if Gritty was your boss?

Hello, everyone! I’m Abby and I’m a senior Advertising major with a concentration in Brand Strategy & Research as well as a minor in Spanish at Temple University’s Klein College of Media and Communication. For the current NHL season I’m interning with the Philadelphia Flyers and Comcast Spectator as the Flyers Charities Marketing and Events Intern. While my internship does not end until the spring, I’ve already learned so much about event planning, community relations, and fundraising in the professional sports sector. Through this internship, I’ve also been able to explore my professional goals as I reach the end of my senior year.

When I started the internship, my knowledge of the NHL and sports marketing in general was very limited. At the same time, I knew my strengths were in community relations and nonprofit marketing. Being able to build my sport marketing muscle while strengthening my nonprofit marketing skills has been the biggest takeaway of my internship thus far. Since starting, I’ve become fascinated in charitable giving and community relations in sports and bridging the gap between audience and organization. I’m incredibly grateful that this internship allows me to develop and practice all of those specialties and I intend to pursue opportunities that are grounded in that in the future.

Working alongside so many passionate people at the arena has shown me how much heart and teamwork go into every fan experience. From the 6am crew to the 50/50 sellers who make each event run seamlessly, I’m inspired by the dedication of everyone, who makes every game and event special. The energy, care, and connection that goes into building these experiences reminds me it’s so much more than hockey, it’s community.
