It’s Always the Little Things
My name is Michael, I’m one of the new interns at PhillyBass’d working as the Social Media and Marketing intern. I am an Advertising student at Temple University with a concentration in Art Direction, looking to move forward into the music and entertainment realm upon graduating. I currently work within the music industry and knew this opportunity interning with PhillyBass’d was a perfect fit for my intern experience.
The first few days at any new job can be overwhelming and nerve wrecking, but PhillyBass’d didn’t give me that impression. The environment was awesome, very welcoming, and had a lot of personality in the room. There is nothing worse then having that awkward tension happen in a room, but everyone was so eager to talk and get to know each other. After completing a few weeks of work here I have undoubtedly learned a valuable life lesson, before even walking into my first day at the office. I may be jumping to conclusions, but the walk to my first day was a terrifying yet insightful experience.
On the corner of 11th and Spring Garden I was waiting for traffic to pass. I stood there with my hands in my pockets, kicking some pebbles and just looking around. I heard a car approaching, but didn’t think much of it since I was standing along side of a busy road. As I look up, a small sedan jumps the curb while taking a turn, nearly crushing my foot. The driver violently then pulled his wheel back on to the road and continued to drive as if nothing had happen. When traffic passed, I cautiously continued to walk to my first day at PhillyBass’d.
What I took away from this experience was to be aware and be prepared. This event outlined the mindset I should carry with me throughout the summer, and throughout my daily life. I needed to be aware of my surroundings, as well as the environment I existed in. It is important to stay on your toes, and be ready for whatever life throws at you. Though the description may sound a bit cheesy, it’s true. This car nearly blind-sided me, and if I had been paying closer attention to my environment, I could have moved out of the way quicker.
Within Phillybass’d I have had unexpected projects thrown on me the minute I stepped into the office. Through this unexpected nature I have been able to evaluate my work, prioritize projects and assignments, and effectively complete client work. I am now aware of the remaining projects for the summer and will be able to see what’s coming to prepare for deadlines and events. Phillybass’d has trained me to expand of my soft skills which has contributed to my overall performance in the office. I’ve become a more confident and well-rounded student. Being aware in the workplace has shown me the areas I need to improve on, and where I can push my strengths and ideas further. I now pay closer attention to all the “little things” and can navigate through situations myself.
