Public Radio is Pretty Cool
My name is Shannon Vo, and I am a music blogger intern at WXPN’s The Key. Interning with The Key has given me so much experience and has helped me expand my musical knowledge. By writing these blogs, I get to learn in depth about different artist and stay updated on everything happening in the music industry.
My job is to keep up to date with different trends, locally and nationally. Note, there are so many things happening every day in the music industry so it’s almost impossible to know everything going on. At the same time, I get to explore the Philadelphia music scene by going to different events such as shows. Going to concerts for work is awesome, but it is stressful, a good kind of stress though. Keeping up with different artist and who’s coming to town is a challenge, but I’ve found so many different sources to help make my life easier. So if you need help keeping up with your favorite artist use Songkick, which keeps you updated on who’s coming to town, and Bandcamp, to discover different artists in different states. Soundcloud and Spotify work too.
It’s crazy to think that I am four months in. I guess time does fly when you’re having fun. I’ve had so many jobs where I dreaded going to work, but at WXPN, I don’t see what I do as work or a choir, which is the best part. I’m grateful to have the opportunity to intern for WXPN, and I can’t thank them enough for everything they have taught me.
Hi Shannon! It sounds like you are having a great experience at WXPN! They are a great station, so working behind the scenes and being able to write for them sounds like a dream! More specifically, it is really awesome that going to shows and different concerts around the area is very much a part of the job. I’m currently looking to get more involved in the Philly music scene somehow with my degree, so it was refreshing to see this post and read about someone who is currently involved and finding success in it.
Hi Shannon, it seems like you’re having a blast at your internship at WXPN and that’s awesome to hear! I’m interning at 101.1 More FM this semester so it’s cool to hear about your experience at a different radio station. Even though our daily responsibilities sound a bit different, I can definitely relate to you on the “good kind of stress” of working in such a fast paced environment. I hope you keep up with your passion in music and definitely keep up your bright outlook on experiences rather than thinking of them as chores.
