The Power of Social Media
Hello, My Name is Matthew Cooper. I’m a senior Advertising major at Temple University concentrating in Brand Strategy at Klein College of Media and Communication. Part of my requirements to graduate included an internship in the advertising field. For the past few months, I’ve been working at Temple Villas — an off-campus property management company, and using my advertising skills to help increase sales, engagement, and brand recognition. Coming into this position, I was quite nervous, but in retrospect, I’m incredibly happy to have had this opportunity to implement many components of my advertising education.
One of the first responsibilities I was given was the control over all social media accounts. For the most part, a majority of our sales stem from connections over social media. I saw that there was no consistent posting, a general lack of engagement. I started to implement a posting schedule as well as posting stories to the accounts almost daily. I found that consistency was truly the key, but we weren’t seeing the same amount of engagement on Instagram as we did on Facebook. From here, I started more heavily watching our Facebook account and implemented the same schedules as Instagram. A few weeks after this change, we started seeing a major increase in connections and sales. I also started to give heavier thought to more interesting ways to connect with our audience. I then started to post about giveaways and special promotions to increase brand engagement and to hopefully increase our sales.
When I think about the beginning of my experience in comparison to where I am now, I’m so happy that I was given this opportunity. I’ve been able to fully see just how much I’ve learned, in addition to coming to a place where I can think about where I want to be in the future. I think social media management is interesting, but a strategist position is something that I think I want to pursue. I’m excited to see where the future takes me.
