Turning Conversations Into Community: A Semester with DMAX

A reflection on my internship with DMAX Club, where I created marketing content to support mental-health conversations and build student community on campus.

Talking about mental health isn’t always easy, especially for college students balancing academics, relationships, and daily stress. That’s why I spent this semester interning with DMAX Club, an organization dedicated to helping students build real connections through open conversations about mental health.

DMAX creates safe, peer-to-peer spaces where students can share experiences, listen to one another, and learn how to offer support. Sometimes, simply feeling heard can make the biggest difference.

As a Marketing and Design Intern, I created social media content, designed promotional materials, and helped build messaging for events to grow awareness and participation. This role taught me how to communicate about mental health with empathy and intention. I became more thoughtful about wording and visuals and spent time researching mental-health resources to share helpful and supportive information.

A highlight of my internship was preparing content for the DMAX Day of Connection Walk at Temple University. Seeing students show up, participate, and support one another made the work feel meaningful and reinforced the impact of storytelling and design in advocacy.

What makes DMAX stand out is its focus on real connection. Instead of emphasizing professional counseling, it prioritizes supportive peer relationships where students feel safe being themselves. The team’s dedication made it easy to collaborate, share ideas, and learn.

I came into this internship looking to strengthen my design and marketing skills, but I left with a deeper appreciation for mental-health advocacy and intentional communication. Working with DMAX showed me how small conversations can create meaningful change and helped me better understand how a nonprofit operates from the inside. I highly recommend exploring nonprofit work and it offers a chance to contribute to a mission that truly matters.
