Welcome to the Real World
Hi! My name is Tia and I am currently an intern at Harmelin Media. At Harmelin I am part of the Account Management team where I have been learning the tricks to the trade for the past two months. Because this is my first internship, I am overwhelmed and excited with the many projects and opportunities that I have been given.
Even though I have only been a part of the team for a minimal amount of time, I have learned and been exposed to many things. One of the most important tasks that I learned is paying attention to details. Sounds so simple, but sometimes the simplest of things are the hardest to grasp. At Harmelin, I created the habit of double or even triple checking my work because it is critical in the advertising industry. One mistake can be destructive to a project such as a budget for a new advertisement or negotiating radio rates with a client.
Getting the opportunity to do many hands on tasks gave me experience to excel in account management. However, the one thing that I value most from Harmelin Media is learning how to present myself in a company. Books and classes can only prepare you so much; negotiating in meetings, encountering potential clients, and contacting current clients on a regular basis teaches you how to be prepared and professional.
Harmelin Media introduced me to the advertising world. They taught me the importance of being prepared and quick on my feet. My host has taught me and given me advice that I know will help me throughout my career. From her I feel that I have been growing personally and professionally in this short amount of time.
Tia, great post! It sounds like you’ve really learned a lot over the past few months! I remember when an employee from Harmelin Media came to speak to my ‘Media & Society’ class a few years ago. I was so intrigued by everything he had to say and still have one of their business cards in my wallet. It seems like a really great place to work!
