Writing with Energy: Insightful Learnings from Writing Blogposts

Hello, I’m a Copywriting and Graphic Design intern at HMS Legal/ Cannabis Law. My responsibilities are to build creative and valuable content across three of the firm’s websites. My duties are also to design and manage social media accounts, as well as research and draft blogs to provide current and relevant content for the firm’s clientele.

The relationship between my position and the overall function of the organization is to help the attorneys and lawyers at HMS still be able to provide their clientele with up to date articles on recent developments of efforts in renewable energy and PA Marijuana legislation. Articles published on HMSLegals blog space are typically written by Attorneys of HMS, but these articles are typically infrequent because said lawyers do not have enough time to prioritize blog posts. I’m providing the brand more online content and engagement with clientele. It’s a little humorous to write a blogpost about my blogpost heavy internship because that is the center of what I do at HMS.

This experience has helped me fine tune my writing and analyzing skills, as well as my overall understanding on grants, funds and bills and how the process works for these approvals. Especially at such an unprecedented time with federal funding grants being stripped away with little to no explanation. Being up to date and being able to research what exactly is happening has been a very informative and insightful experience. Synthesizing legal documents into shorter, digestible blog posts has expanded my ability to understand what exactly is being affected by laws and restrictions.

It has also been really interesting to focus on medical cannabis law in Pennsylvania. I’ve researched and focused on regulations, new medical discovery benefits in cannabis, and the process of potentially becoming recreationally legal by July 1st of this year.

This Internship has been more blog post focused than I intentionally thought it would be, but I’m still learning a lot and learning how to improve my writing in the process. My experience has strengthened my knowledge of federal funding and how this federal funding is divided for renewable energy, and how policies shape PA’s energy landscape. This internship also made me so much more aware of how many federal grants aren’t taken advantage of because people are not aware they are accessible.

My advice to future interns is to always be open to critique because you learn the most from recognizing where you can grow.
