You might be thinking, “How did an Advertising major land a job at a construction management company?” My name is Morgan Kovatch and I am interning with Tester Construction Group located at 1541 Ridge Avenue. And here is where I explain exactly what I do for this amazing company.

Tester Construction Group is a construction management company that builds apartments, single-family homes, and commercial buildings all over the city of Philadelphia. A development group, architecture firm or anyone that needs to build something, hires Tester to take over and manage the construction behind the project.

My initial intent was to get a job in Real Estate on campus and learn more about that field. It has always been an interest of mine and I thought it would be beneficial to add another tool to my belt. The property management group I originally applied to said they didn’t have any openings so they passed my resume along to Tester.

I went in for an interview shortly after I got a call from them stating they had received my resume and would love for me to come in for an interview. The interview went well and I was very interested in learning more about their company and the field. My father told me it was a great opportunity and hoped I would get the position. I didn’t hear back for quite some time, but I kept sending follow up emails just so they wouldn’t forget about me.

If there is one thing I learned from this particular interview experience, it is to be pushy, but not too pushy. I knew they liked me and I had a good feeling after leaving the interview. I was eager to hear back and wanted the job really badly. I sent over a few emails and they didn’t say yes, but they didn’t say no. Eventually, after one last email expressing how I would thrive at their company, she accepted me as their intern and I started two weeks later.

Although construction management isn’t what I studied the past four years of college, it has been an awesome experience. Learning new terms, becoming close with my co-workers and learning the ins-and-outs of how another company operates is something I can take with me for future career opportunities. I brought them some knowledge that they might not have known about marketing and advertising and they taught me an abundance of new knowledge in a field in which I never thought I would have the slightest bit of interest.

Long story short, take risks and stay open-minded when it comes to internship opportunities and career paths. You never know who you are going to meet, what you can learn and if you end up liking it or not.

  1. Hey, Morgan, this sounds like a super cool, out-of-the-box experience. As agencies work with a wide array of industries, it’s awesome that you will now have this one under your belt and be able to speak their language. While it might not have been the job you set out to have, I’m sure it will only benefit you in your future career path.
