I’ve Found My Calling (In-House Intern)

Hello everyone and thank you for stopping by to read my post! My name is Kourtney Thompson and I am a current second semester senior at here at TU. As of right now, I am working as the university’s very own Orientation, New Student, & Family Programs (ONSFP) in-house intern and boy had it been a ride! Since becoming the Graphic Design & Social Media Intern back in October of 2018, I have had the privilege of being fully immersed in a environment that I believe to support my calling in life. In the time that I have spent at Temple, I have had 5 different internships spanning across multiple disciplines. I’ve working in the non-profit sector, for-profit sector, as well as in-house. So, of all the experience that I’ve gained thus far, I really feel that my current internship propelled me in a career direction that I will find great joy in for, *whispers* hopefully, the rest of my life.

In being at the ONSFP office, I have had the opportunity to work on projects that not only interest me, but challenge me to become a better designer, critical thinker, and working professional. Because not everybody in the office is well versed in design production and branding, I have been able to heavily apply all the best practices that Temple’s Advertising Department has taught me. Working on a things like proactive office wide re-brands, brand style guides, new logos, social media templates, and more, has not only pushed me outside of my comfort zone, but has also shown me that this is the part of the design world that I enjoy the most. Of course, things like putting together social media content calendars, coming up with themed posts/stories and hashtags are parts that I like to, but, I think that brand design is really what I am meant to do.

  1. Hi Kourtney! It’s so great to hear that you found your calling, as an advertising major myself I know how hard it can be to find your niche. It sounds like you have a lot of fun projects in the works, I will keep an eye out for some of your work!

  2. Hi Kourtney,
I am very impressed that you have had 5 different internships in your time here at temple. Especially in all different disciplines. It is very exciting to hear that you have found so much joy in your current internship. I agree that temples advertising department does a good job at preparing us for these first type of positions, and I have found the same kind of success in my own internship. I wish you all the best in your current internship and your future endeavors!

  3. Hi Kourtney! I love that you wrote about working in-house because I am doing somewhat of the same thing and I love it! I am currently deciding if I like working for in-house or more agency-based advertising and you have brought up some really good points about in-house. I think it is so cool that you’ve been able to work on projects for the university and make an impact! Good luck with the rest of your time at Temple!
