Limitless

Sometimes I find it difficult to step outside of my comfort zone. I’ll be graduating in December and it gets harder and harder to remain the shy and timid person that I’ve always been. I’m not the type that likes to be the center of attention. I would rather just blend into my surroundings. My internship at Harmelin Media has impacted me in a way that sitting in a classroom could never have. It is one thing to learn about different tracks in advertising, but it’s another to experience it.

Harmelin Media mainly focuses on media planning and buying, which ironically is not my track. I’ve always been a creative person, so naturally I drifted towards an Art Direction track. I had taken the required Media Planning class about a year ago. While I enjoyed it, I didn’t really think I would need to use media planning skills on a day-to-day basis. The opportunity to intern at Harmelin Media came up and I immediately wanted to take it. I was intimidated by the thought of not knowing enough or not being as great as their previous interns, but someone at Harmelin Media believed I was capable.

Being at Harmelin Media for the past few months has completely changed my confidence. With the guidance of my supervisor and his team, I was not only able to learn, but I was able to grow. The great thing about Harmelin Media is they want you to ask questions. They want you to be curious. They want you to walk away with an experience that not all internships offer. Working with such a knowledgeable team has made me excited for the future. It’s scary to picture where you’ll be in a few years. A year ago I thought once I graduated I’d probably work in the creative field (not that I’ve completely shut that out of my mind) but after having such a great internship, it’s really opened up my mind to working in different fields of advertising. I feel like the limits that I’ve placed on myself before no longer exist.

  1. That is great that you had such a good experience with Harmelin! I feel very similarly about my internship this semester. Having an internship before graduation is a great idea because it helps a person come out of their shell and get a feel for what it’s like to work in the real world. Sounds like you are all set for the real world!
