Rockin’ out at Live Nation

This internship has opened my eyes to the music industry and the variety of marketing efforts that are made to put on a great show.

Hey everyone, my name is Cole, and I am a senior advertising major with a concentration in media planning and account management. This semester, I had the pleasure of being a marketing intern at Live Nation. This internship has opened my eyes to the music industry and the variety of marketing efforts that are made to put on a great show.

Live Nation is an events promoter and venue operator. They have venues all over the Philadelphia area including, The Fillmore, The Foundry, The Met, BB&T Pavilion, Theater of the Living Arts, and many more. If you’ve been to a concert in Philly, it was probably at a Live Nation venue! This was a super exciting opportunity for me as I am an avid concert-goer. So, being able to promote my favorite artists and bands utilizing the advertising and marketing skills that I gained at Temple seemed like a dream come true.

The specific venue I was tasked with was The Queen in Wilmington, DE. Although this is a smaller venue than BB&T and The Fillmore as far as big-name artists, I still managed to have a blast with it. Some highlights include writing copy for social media on events like “Saved By the ’90s” a ’90s themed dance party, “The British Invasion” a British invasion themed dance party and even “Micro-Wrestling All-Stars” a large micro-wrestling event! This kind of variety kept me energized to write fun and creative copy but also be strategic with how we hit our target audience.

The crew at Live Nation wanted to make sure that I had as much input as possible on all of their marketing challenges. This gave me the ability to pick out certain target audiences for email marketing campaigns, brainstorm creative media placements such as a poster in a record store, a ticket giveaway on the radio or a post on a music lover Facebook page. I even had the opportunity to go see the show that I just previously worked on that past week.

The marketing department is there to help you every step of the way. My supervisor immediately made me feel like I had a friend from day one of the internship. She made sure that I felt comfortable, asked me about what I wanted to learn, and had her door open for any questions that came up during the internship. I am grateful to have worked with such a passionate and talented group of people, with great taste in music.

Live Nation is a great place to intern. You will find yourself wearing many different hats from writing copy, coming up with marketing strategy or filing paperwork. It is all part of the hectic music industry experience. Although my time was cut short because of COVID-19, this experience has given me a whole new perspective on my career as I plan to work in the music industry in the future.
