The End of an Era

My name is Lacy Balistrieri and my six months interning at the March of Dimes Southeastern PA Division has slowly come to an end. Luckily, I was able to participate in their biggest annual event before my time was through. March for Babies Philadelphia was held on April 28th at the Museum of Art. I  was given the job of photographing family teams and the event as a whole because they caught wind I have a photography class this semester. When I had down time I would walk to the VIP tent and help out there.

I arrived at the Phila Museum of Art around 7:30 am and the walk started at 8 followed by the run at 9. The event died down around noon and I left. Overall, it was a great experience as a photographer. At times I felt overwhelmed because there were a lot of people in attendance but generally people were friendly and in a great mood, probably because we had such great weather that day.

Working at the March of Dimes was a great first internship opportunity not only because of certain skills I picked up, but because of the relationships I was able to make. I left the office with every single person offering to write recommendations if I ever need one. I know that in the future I will go back to March of Dimes, even if it’s just to volunteer and keep in touch with the other employees. So that’s what I think is the most important thing I learned through this experience. Not how to create a program book, or plan an event, or even raise funds for a great cause, but to treat everyone with respect and you will get it in return.

I’m so thankful I was able to work with a non-profit because it opened my eyes to a possibility I never thought of before. I’m looking forward to a paid marketing internship I have this summer because it’s more corporate and conservative. The reason I’m looking forward to it is because I will be able to compare and contrast the two experiences. Either way, I will truly miss my friends at the March of Dimes.

  1. I totally agree with what you said about building relationships in a office setting. People always talk about networking with other workers and supervisors, but it doesn’t just mean on LinkedIn.com! Being known as a courteous, agreeable person who’s a hard worker is a great way to build your personal brand. Nice article!

  2. I think it’s great that you got to work for a non profit. I also find myself looking for the biggest company to work for, but working for a non profit would be a great contrast. I am sure working to help others was a great motivator. Also, The event also looked awesome!
