Why do trains only come once every hour after 7?

I’ll start by saying it feels like the summer is just about to start now in mid August. Working as a full-time design intern for Digitas Health in center city isn’t really a cushy 9-5 schedule. Its more like – stroll in sometime around 10am and leave between the hours of 6 and 10pm feeling like you forgot something or someone important. I’m not really sure what hours I’ll be working on a given day. And that doesn’t include work I may have over the weekend too. It can get busy. But then, if I wasn’t busy id probably have more time to find something to complain about. To say the least, its fun. The people are fun. The time spent socializing outside work – that’s priceless. And most importantly, I can’t really imagine an office with a better atmosphere.

Of course, from time to time, the work itself does get tedious. I can’t help but question the future of an entry level design position in the advertising industry. But in this super intense, post-college, career path competition the opportunity to come to that realization is the best thing that this internship has given me.

I do not see myself sitting behind a desk for 8+ hours a day. At DH, I jumped on any opportunity I had to help out with printing or attend a meeting no matter what about. To get a chance to experience how a creative machine works with 450+ people – that’s what I looked forward too. I’d rather get work done face-to-face, as suppose to face-to-artboard all day long. That being said, the creative suite and a mac – they’re only tools. They are only a means to an end. Ultimately, I’ll progress everyday in my career to master that craft, but those tools are not my passion. Looking at, analyzing, and envisioning great design – now that sounds more fitting.

Interacting with some of the higher up Art Directors and then the Creative Directors at DH makes me want their job. Working with some of the lower, junior designers makes me not want theirs. We all have to start somewhere and I can’t live unless I have some sort of personal project to keep my mind busy, but the desire to be in that social setting where my desk is one of the last places I get work done at work – that’s what this experience has given me.

  1. I feel the same way. As designers we want the best of both worlds. Being able to design and work on our computers. But then we also want to DESIGN and work anywhere else but a desk. Hopefully, there is a happy in between.

P.S. I like your rainbow image. Makes me wish I was there. In the rainbow.
