Advertising Major to Public Relations Intern
This past semester I have been interning at Cashman and Associates Public Relations & Special Events, a boutique public relations firm in the Northern Liberties neighborhood of Philadelphia. The firm has a wide array of clients including AMG Revel, Hotel Monaco, Flywheel Sports, Mitchell and Ness, Bernie Robbins, Hotel Palomar, Shake Shack and Steven Starr restaurants.
While I have had previous internships in the public relations industry, I have yet to have one in Philadelphia, so it has definitely been a great learning experience about the Philadelphia media industry. I realized through my first public relations internship that I wanted to pursue the entertainment industry, and at Cashman and Associates I still received a taste of some entertainment industry clients located in the Greater Philadelphia Area.
My past public relations internship was a great learning experience but more informal in terms of the business processes. Because it was company of less than 5 employees it was more of an all hands on deck situation. At Cashman and Associates it is a more formal business environment so I was able to learn the new business process, billing, and be exposed to more client meetings.
One of the most valuable experiences I have had at Cashman and Associates that I was not able to do elsewhere was work and assist the account executives during two CBS Talk Philly segments for clients. Not only was this the first time I was ever in a broadcast television station (and having plenty of friends who are MSP or Broadcast Journalism majors, I have to admit I was a bit jealous), but I received a hands on experience about what goes into the fashion, beauty, or entertainment segments during morning and mid-day talk shows.
