ECommerce and Design
I spent my internship in-house at Souvenir Jewelry, a local jewelry company based in the East Passyunk neighborhood of South Philadelphia. Souvenir Jewelry specializes in designs inspired by heavy metal. Each piece is uniquely designed and manufactured by hand by a very talented small staff. The brand has a very popular Instagram profile and generates a large number of eCommerce sales as well as in-store sales. Over the past few months, I have had the opportunity to hone my skills by taking a design-focused approach to my role at Souvenir Jewelry.
For a while, my role was mainly focused on operations and assisting with operations-related tasks. Recently we have needed to create more content for the holiday season. Most of my days working are spent creating newsletters and secondary content for social media and the online store. I have had a lot of fun and learned a large range of new skills completing these tasks. We recently decided to take a new approach to promote sales during the Black Friday and Cyber Monday weekend. We promoted special discounts every few hours by implementing a series of newsletters and social media posts called “Power Hour.” For these promotions, we sent out newsletters every few hours promoting a new product that was on sale for a special price. After that segment of time was over, we would make that product inactive and move on to the next power hour special. Overall, there were 16 different promotions and 16 different newsletters that were sent out.
Completing this project, and the many others I have worked on taught me a lot about time management. This specific project allowed me to design in a different style than I am used to. It was an in-depth project that required a lot of different approaches and different ways of thinking to complete. Overall, I am very happy with the results, and this project helped immensely with seeing through all of the other competing Black Friday and Cyber Monday campaigns that took up most of the social media over the weekend. I really have learned to love graphic design, and I am so glad to be pursuing it as a career and creative outlet. Graphic design allows me to incorporate art and creativity into my career while also giving me the space to troubleshoot and see how my work is received by an audience. I am glad that Souvenir Jewelry has allowed me to be their graphic designer and be part of a great team.
