My world and the world in PHL
The Global Philadelphia Association’s main goal is “to assist – and to encourage greater interaction among – the many organizations and people who are engaged in one form or another of international activity within the Greater Philadelphia Region.” Six months ago, I volunteered to photograph the GlobalPhilly 2013 Party via Facebook. As I conclude my time with Global Philadelphia, I am still amazed by how easy it was to become involved with such a unique initiative. Distinguishing between the two, The Global Philadelphia Association consists of nine of the leading international organizations in the Greater Philadelphia Region and GlobalPhilly™ 2013 was the Association’s 47-day Exposition of international events in Philadelphia.
At the time that I joined, there were a total of three interns and five staff members, all of whom were very friendly and welcoming. Since this group was willing to take the time to learn something about me and my studies, the leader of GP13 (Zabeth Teelucksingh) was able to explain that they were looking to hire an intern who would quantify media coverage of the expo and strive to measure the success of GlobalPhilly™ 2013 in terms of reach and effectiveness, presenting me with an opportunity to join their team.
I know nothing about math or statistics. I have no idea where I got the courage to go into something so blind, but I had confidence and was willing to take on learning new things in order to satisfy their needs. I will be posting another blog post this time next Tuesday, covering the final event that I did for Global Philadelphia, their Third Annual Members Meeting. You will see graphic design elements, rather than statistics. This is because Global Philadelphia is made up a team of some of the most amazing and understanding individuals that I ever met in my life. After a while, they could tell that statistics was not my area of expertise but they were happy to assign me to other tasks. One being the GlobalPhilly 2013 Treasure Hunt, which you can find more about in this video that I made for an International Student Video Contest.
This is one of my favorite photos taken during my time with Global Philadelphia. I was promoting the “I am a Global Philadelphian” campaign in Rittenhouse Square and met this Brazilian couple who was so happy to promote the organization and have their photo taken.
