Women in Construction… but With a Twist!

Hi everyone! I am Breanna Donahue and I am a junior advertising major with a concentration in Account Management and Brand Strategy. This summer I received my first internship with EDA Contractors Inc, a contracting company where I intern with their marketing team. I have always been surrounded by this industry as my father is a construction worker. Now I help shine light towards the expertise within this industry.

My role lets me highlight the incredible dedication and effort of everyone involved, from those in the field to those behind the scenes. I’m learning how to tell EDA’s story, showcasing the hard work and pride that goes into each project. I’m grateful for the opportunity to combine my passion for advertising and brand strategy with my appreciation for the construction industry.

Working with EDA has been very eye opening and has set my standards across the board. EDA’s strong emphasis on company culture has shown me the importance of fostering an environment where collaboration, innovation, and respect thrive. The company’s dedication to teamwork and its employees’ well-being is reflected in every project and interaction. That is where our slogan “successful together” ties in. Seeing how EDA values not only the work they do but also the people who make it possible has inspired me to look for similar values in any future organization I work with. Their commitment to excellence extends beyond just construction.

As a marketing intern at EDA, I have gained hands-on experience across various sectors of advertising. My responsibilities have included writing blogs, maintaining relationships with external companies, creating digital designs, managing website updates, and overseeing social media content creation and scheduling. I definitely learned I have a liking for graphic design and could see myself growing within that field, and pursuing content creation. Through these tasks, I have become proficient in tools such as HubSpot, Monday, and PlanGrid, skills that will benefit my future endeavors. Additionally, I have actively participated in weekly meetings and contributed to ad campaigns. It is very rewarding to see my ideas play a role in helping such an outstanding company grow.

With EDA being my first internship, I am spoiled to say the list. Everyone I have worked with thus far in each department has inspired me. EDA is a family, with everyone being welcoming, supportive, and passionate, creating a workplace where teamwork and personal development are truly valued. This experience has been everything and more for me as I have truly grown as an individual and as a professional. I did not expect to gain life long connections and outside opportunities within marketing and media production. With that being said, my advice to those finding an internship would be to be open to learning, ask questions, network within the organization, take initiative, and reflect on your goals. Opportunities and knowledge are truly endless within this industry, always have an open mind.

  1. Hi Breanna! I loved reading your blog and I’m so happy to hear you had a wonderful internship experience. The work you have done with EDA Contractors Inc. is similar to what I have been doing with Temple’s Real Estate Institute. It’s really cool to see similar work and platforms used across all different industries. Throughout my internship I have also gained a passion for graphic design and the creative side of Advertising. I think your advice for those finding their first internships is also so important and relevant to today. Having an open mind can be scary when you’re starting something new but it’s so important because there is always so much to learn and so many opportunities to grow. Great post!
