A Beginner’s Guide to Managing Social Media

It was truly an honor to work for the gallery and to be apart of a team that pulls together such amazing artistic exhibitions.

Hello! My name is Nicole Pondaco and this semester I had the pleasure of working for Alfa Art Gallery in New Brunswick, New Jersey as a Social Media & Public Relations intern.

For my last semester here at Temple University, I was tasked with acquiring an internship to maintain throughout the entire semester, working in a position that I hope to pursue after college. I have high hopes to be a Social Media Manager for a big company one day, which is why I started my journey here at Alfa Art Gallery as a Social Media & Public Relations intern.

Alfa Art Gallery is a non-profit organization determined to support emerging and well-established artists and to give their work exposure and critical following within the art community.

Each day that I have worked for Alfa Art Gallery, I am pleasantly surprised with the variety of skills I pick up there. I started at the gallery by posting banners to social media to promote the upcoming exhibition. I then quickly moved on to sending out press releases to local media to get coverage for the exhibitions. Through my experiences at Alfa Art Gallery I have learned how to adapt to different situations and handle a variety of tasks, many of which I had never done before.

For example, prior to this experience I had never used the platform Word Press to maintain a website before. I am also now a much more confident and efficient video editor, which was not something I was originally expecting to gain from this experience.

It was truly an honor to work for the gallery and to be apart of a team that pulls together such amazing artistic exhibitions. I really enjoyed being around such beautiful artworks by amazing local artists and being given the opportunity to show these artworks to the community.

The biggest takeaway I have from this experience is that it is important in this industry to work efficiently with others to produce quality work. The most crucial skill I strengthened was my time management skills. Each person in this organization plays a role in making everything come together cohesively, so it is important to know how to get things done on schedule to respect everybody’s time.
