A journey of self through professionalism
Hello Owls! As a sophomore advertising student with a concentration in media planning, I spent loads of time looking for an internship that would be meaningful for the career that I desire to pursue. I landed a summer internship at MayoSeitz Media located in Conshohocken, PA.
Going into this internship, I feared that I lacked knowledge in this field as I am only a sophomore, but as time goes by I understand that this internship is one massive learning experience and lacking expertise is part of being a student. The people working at this agency are what make it so special. Everyone greeted me with open arms on my first day, and I continue to grow closer with my colleagues. Being the only intern, I feared that I may be overlooked but this is certainly not the case. Being the only intern has lead me to gain insight in each department of the agency, as each of my colleagues goes out of their way to show me what they do on a day to day basis.
Although I have been assigned some very interesting projects, I have an appreciation for the shadowing aspect of this internship. Shadowing my colleagues has allowed me to really understand the duties of a media planner which has lead me to get excited about what my future holds in the advertising industry. I have developed an unexpected interest in the analytics portion of the job as I have worked closely with the analytics team. The analytics department at MayoSeitz Media contains a few individuals who reflect on the data of each client. Whether it is data relating to different social media platforms or Out of Home advertising, the analytics team researches how to direct the client to success while reflecting on statistics that they have researched using a software called “Tableau”. I was never a fan of numbers and would dread going to math class, so having this new found appreciation for analytics reporting has been a journey of self-reflection, too. This internship has pushed me out of my comfort zone and has lead me to appreciate things that I was so scared of in the past.
This internship at MayoSeitz Media has taught me so much about the advertising internship in such a short period of time. Although I love learning and applying what I have learned in school to real-life experience, I also appreciate what this internship has taught me about myself. As I said prior, I was so nervous to start at this agency because I feared that I would not be “good enough”, but that is certainly not the case. This internship has given me a sense of confidence not only in the workplace but also in my day-to-day life. I have learned how to communicate in a professional space, ask insightful questions, and make new friends in an unfamiliar environment. I am so grateful for the opportunity to intern at MayoSeitz Media, and I am so excited for what the rest of my experience here has in store for me!
