Brand Yourself Pt.1

As advertising majors we always hear about the importance of branding ourselves. But what does that really mean? Why do we have to brand ourselves? Isn’t just having a portfolio, resume, and Linkedin account enough? If you’re still thinking about what’s the answer, it is no. During my interview for my current internship at the design consultency PlusUs, one of the elements my creative director said that set me apart was my experience with strategy and research.

Advertising is a competitive field. Our department is unique in that we are the only advertising department in the country that has four advertising tracks that go beyond just art and copy! Not only can you specialize in your track but you also have the opportunity to take introductory classes outside of your track. A lot of other students in the country don’t have the same opportunity. So not only can you be in the account management track but you can also have an eye for good design and take classes to understand the design software.

So what does this actually have to do with branding yourself? Let me explain…

+ When you think of a brand what comes to mind?

Apple, Nike, Ray Ban, Coca Cola, Ikea

These brands come to mind because they are examples of companies that have good branding. There are what you as advertising students should be emulating.

+ Why?

A brand is a personal perception.

It is…

  • Personality
  • Consistency
  • Relevancy
  • Differentiability
  • Authenticity
  • Memorable

+ What does good branding do for you?

  • Distinguishes your from others students coming into the job market
  • Legitimizes your efforts to potential employers
  • Generates buzz
