Hello, curious reader! My name is Colin Giering, a student and independent filmmaker. I am a sophomore at Temple University with an intent to graduate with a degree in Advertising. This past 2018 Fall Semester I had the privilege of working with Temple University’s Marketing Department specifically, within the video department. My experience there can be summarized as fun, challenging, engaging and expansive. My internship duties included, brainstorming ideas for social media content, producing short consumable video pieces for Temple’s various social media channels, providing feedback on projects, and shooting b-roll for future university projects and schools. My experience working here has taught me the value of collaboration and how important it is to pay attention to details. When working on video projects that will be seen by thousands you learn to be an imperfect perfectionist. Working with strict deadlines on time-sensitive content was challenging given my nature to make every last frame count. Working for Temple, I learned to balance perfection with putting your work out there. Taking words from Steve Jobs himself, “Real artists ship.” Working with the video team in the marketing department helped me develop skills in motion design and editing that I otherwise would not have learned. I plan to continue to learn more about motion graphics and design to incorporate into my videos. Temple’s Strategic Marketing Department is packed full of creative individuals, who work together effortlessly to produce content for the masses. Temple is committed not only to promoting itself, but also to promoting the accomplishments and good deeds of students. Promoting the good welfare of the student isn’t a requirement, but it makes the university stand out while encouraging others to do good for the school, community, and nation. Working for Temple’s Marketing Department was everything I thought it would be and more. Through this learning experience, I was able to continue to hone my craft in filmmaking while making an impact on other students lives. I learned many new skills such as, how to operate professional film cameras, interview lighting techniques, basics of Adobe After Effects animation, sound design, and much more.
