Remote Internship at a Startup

My name is Ashley DellaRatta and I am a junior Advertising major on the Account Management track. During the fall 2019 semester, I had a remote digital marketing internship with Spari Travel, a startup business based in New York City. As advertising students, many of us consider most internships to be with large advertising agencies or big companies with in-house work.  For my first internship, I really just wanted to get my foot in the door, so I opted for something a little different.

I chose a remote position because I really wanted something that I was able to incorporate into my already existing schedule. The biggest aspect of business that Spari taught me was the importance of communication. Being a remote intern, it sometimes can be hard to convey ideas through email or direct message. It is important to be able to build good communication skills, whether it be in person or online. I firmly believe that working with Spari strengthened my communication skills, and encouraged me to speak up when I needed clarification, even if it was through a screen.

Working directly with the founders of the company was also very beneficial. I was able to get direct feedback on what worked and what didn’t so I was able to really develop my own social media skill set. I also worked very closely with the graphic designer, who taught me a lot about design and what is best for social media. As someone who is interested in design and looking to further my knowledge on it, I really appreciated being able to work with someone that has been doing it for a few years now.

After working for Spari for a couple months now, I have learned so much about what it is like to build a business from the ground up. I admire the founders greatly for being able to take a leap of faith in starting their own business. I have full confidence in their abilities to take Spari Travel to great heights, and feel honored that I was able to be a part of their journey. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with Spari and look forward to what they do with their brand in the future.
