I attended the Senior Job Hunt Workshop at Klein Career Services to help me figure out how to land that post-graduation job. Lu Ann Cahn, the Director of Klein Career Services, gave us these big-picture questions to ask ourselves to figure out where to start and how to get there.

Who’s on your team?

Think about the people with whom you’ve worked, who have supported you, and who know about your field. These are the people who can give you advice, mentorship, or even just cheer you on along the way.

What do you want?

While recent grads can’t always be picky, think about some of the things you’re looking for in a job. In which kind of environment would you like to work…a small or large agency, Philadelphia, New York City, or Los Angeles? Even if you’re not qualified for your ideal job just yet, take a look at the job postings so you know the areas where you need to gain more experience.

What are your passions, skills, or hobbies?

What do you do in your free time? Do your hobbies relate to your field? You’re going to spend 40 hours a week working at a job, so go after something you’re passionate about.

Do you know anyone doing your dream job or who works in your field? Reach out and offer to buy them coffee. They can give you advice and might even know of some opportunities to which you could apply. Did you have a great internship? Call up your old supervisor to catch up and see what’s new at the company.

Are you ready?

Make sure you have your résumé, cover letter, and LinkedIn ready. You never know when an opportunity might arise, so make sure you’re ready to impress on the fly.

Lastly, go visit Lu Ann at the Klein Career Services office. Schedule an appointment with for résumé and cover letter reviews, mock interviews, or even just to chat about your internship and job search. You’ve got the whole world ahead of you, so give it owl you got!
